We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy O’Keefe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kathy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When our son, Brett, was struggling with his drug addiction, there was no time for anything else. It absorbed all of our time and energy. The disease was misunderstood and my husband and I isolated. After Brett died, March 20, 2010, I knew that I had to do something. God told me I was going to do something. So we looked at what we lacked, knowing that was what our mission would be. We lacked Education, Support, and Resources. And that is all that Winning The Fight does.

No one can be on this journey by themselves. You need help. Sometimes that means someone walking with you, sometimes they walk ahead of you, and sometimes they hold you up so you can take a step.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an architect through my education. I love making space more workable, and more beautiful. When I started Winning The Fight, I feel like I am doing the same thing. Families have ugly, unworkable, and chaos in their homes. We just work with the family and help them through recovery. Instead of buildings, we make people better, which is just beautiful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Love taking people into the downtown area to see all the great buildings, museums, parks, and restaurants. In Dallas, we love Nasher and Perot museums, Klyde Warren Park, Cafe Momentum, and the Statler and Lorenzo hotels.

We love taking people to Ft. Worth as well. There are so many great places there to experience. We also love taking people to experiences like axe throwing, Escape rooms, concerts and theater.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My person is my husband Ben. As soon as Brett died, we started working. Ben is my cheerleader, my sounding board, my support, my “Event” guy and even my DJ for events. He stands beside me whenever I need, but the best part is that he often is beside me when I don’t realize that I need him.
