Meet Katheryn Mojica | Balloon artist & event coordinator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katheryn Mojica and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katheryn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Growing up, I always felt I was meant for more than just a regular every day job. I never knew what it was or what it would end up being, I just always had this feeling of being meant for more. My boyfriend and I had just moved into our new home October of 2020. The first holiday coming up was Valentine’s Day so I started looking at ideas on how I can decorate our house to surprise him. I immediately went to Pinterest and looked up “easy balloon ideas”. I had minor experience from decorating for my nephews birthday parties over the years, I scrolled and scrolled looking at so many ideas thinking “if I want to do something like this for my boyfriend, maybe someone else will also want to”. I also figured “ehh, what do I have to lose. I can just make some extra cash with a few items”. I posted a poll on Instagram, ordered supplies and posted a collection with no intention of it turning into a full blown business. Little did I know, Valentine’s Day would barely be the tip of the ice berg for me and my business!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Although I’ve always had a creative side to me, if you would’ve told me I’d be a “balloon artist”, I probably would’ve laughed and said, “what the heck is that?”. I absolutely LOVE the creative aspect of what my business represents. No 2 pieces of work will ever really look exactly the same – one might have just a touch more decals than another depending on what I’m putting together. When I’m asked about expansion, if one day I’ll hire employees to “take over” making my orders, my answer is always no. Balunz by kat will always remain by kat. Reason being, it means the world to me when someone chooses ME to decorate for them. Whether it’s something small or an entire event set up, I’m going to be in your pictures forever – that’s not something I ever take lightly. It’s so important to me since day one of opening balunz by kat to ALWAYS run my business on integrity, hard work and trust. To have my clients trust me and know I will always go above & beyond for them, whatever the occasion or circumstance, that’s what I live for. Even if something has gone wrong, my clients know I will go to the ends of the earth to make it right. I also strongly stand behind being budget friendly with our mission “for the ones you love at a price you’ll love” – not because I want to be “cheap” but because I want every person to know they are worthy of beautiful events, no matter the budget size. The hardest lesson I’ve learned is it’s okay to not be everyone’s cup of tea. I used to get soooooo defeated when I got left on read, didn’t receive inquiries or was second to another artists work. If there’s anything I want my fellow business peers to take away from this is, not everyone is meant to be your client. At the end of the day, MY clients will find me. If someone doesn’t book with me, they were never meant to be mine in the first place.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This one is easy! For the best sushi in Vegas (no, you can’t change my mind on this one!), Samurai Japanese steakhouse ! It’s the only place my boyfriend and I will get sushi from – it’s the bomb! We also love finding new local foodie places – Vito’s Tacos has the most delicious birria tacos! La Vecinidad is hands down my favorite Mexican spot – they have such a family friendly environment. As soon as you walk through the door, you automatically feel at home. The owner Vanessa is one of the most genuine, inspiring, entrepreneurial women I’ve ever met.
Besides the stereotypical strip activities, I highly recommend checking out Fuhu at Resorts World – they have the best bartender Zach who gives typo notch service and makes the best drinks (he’s also a pretty amazing brother in law).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my story to a few people who have impacted my entire business journey. Kassidy Owen, my ultimate business confidant for always challenging me creatively and putting me in place when I’m not in alignment with my goals. My sisters Francis and Ingrid for always believing in me and never making me feel “silly” for chasing even the wildest of dreams. My mom for constantly reminding me of my potential and pushing me to set higher goals for myself outside of my comfort zone. She is a constant reminder of how important it is to always move in my faith. My best friends Courtney & Ana for always coming along for the ride whenever I need help, never asking twice. My partner Robert – I would absolutely 100% not be anywhere near where I am today without his unconditional love and support – I would’ve quit a long time ago on myself if I didn’t have someone as incredible as him to remind me of who I am and what my business stands for.
