We had the good fortune of connecting with Juline Mathe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Juline, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always dreamed about opening up my own food establishment. I come from a family of chefs and my mom setting the trend with our family restaurant in Jamaica. I had to take a leave of absence from my airline job as a Flight Attendant during the pandemic because I am medically high risk for COVID and so I thought about the fact that most restaurants were forced to close their doors. This was my motivation to launch Renee’s Jerk chicken in a mobile manner with our food truck.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
A lot of people know about Jerk Chicken from visiting Jamaica and they come back home longing for that authentic taste. Real Jerk Chicken must be smoked not grilled or baked. If you don’t smoke it you cant call it jerk chicken. I also created my own personal jerk rub. I wanted when you bite into my jerk chicken it is like nothing you’ve ever tasted. That’s what sets us apart from a lot of Jamaican restaurants. My menu is very simple. I offer Jerk Chicken and Oxtails. 2 of my islands most popular dishes. I figured if I focus on 2 items I can deliver extraordinary service which is why most days we sell out within 3 hours. With that being said it certainly did not come easy. There was a time in February 2021 where I thought about giving up and just going back to flying full time. I hit several roadblocks trying to find somewhere to park. My customers where hunting me down and week after week I could not get permits because I have a trailer vs a truck. I was about to list my trailer for sale when Ram Mehta called me trying to buy food and I told him we are closed and most likely would not reopen. He told me he saw my Fox4 interview with Terrence Friday and also heard good reviews about my food. He encouraged me not to and graciously offered to have me park in front of his Restaurant La Meglio Pizza. I was skeptical at first but I put my faith in God and we have formed an amazing friendship. I am now parked at Rams on Fridays and on Saturdays we can be found at different HOA events. I want the world to know when one door closes another one opens. Never give up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well being the resident foodie I would take them to La Meglio Pizza. The pizza is simply delicious but they have these wings affectionately called “ Life Changing Wings”. Amazing does not start to describe them. I’m personally addicted to them. I would of course take them to Renee’s Jerk Chicken to get some authentic jerk chicken and some fall off the bone Oxtails. I would definitely take them to The Star in Frisco and last but not least the Shops of Legacy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my ShoutOut to my brothers Ram Mehta & Terrence Friday from Fox 4 News.

I also have to shoutout my team. My husband Joel, My Mom Dorreth, My brothers Mario & Nigel, my sweet baby girl Lauren Renee and last but not least my best friends Rakhi and Tiffany along with everyone in our circle that helped me get this business off the ground. It certainly took a team effort to come together to pull this off and I’m eternally grateful.
