We had the good fortune of connecting with the staff of The Resale Shop and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
The Resale Shop is a social enterprise of Center for Transforming Lives. This means all proceeds (minus business expenses) directly support the nonprofit. Center for Transforming Lives works side-by-side with women and their children to disrupt the cycle of poverty in Tarrant County by offering housing supports, early childhood education, economic mobility services, and clinical counseling. The Resale Shop keeps quality high and prices low so that our customers can always find what they need at an affordable price. We have a sale every single day so that items are accessible and affordable to the community
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Resale Shop is a nonprofit thrift shop, owned and operated by Center for Transforming Lives. Because all proceeds directly support Center for Transforming Lives, we are able to give back to our community in tremendous ways. Participants enrolled in programs at Center for Transforming Lives are awarded “Resale Bucks,” which are store credits that allow them to shop for clothing, furniture, housewares, children’s items, etc., at no cost. This ensures that they get the items they need while saving for their financial goals. We are very proud to work with Center for Transforming Lives to offer this to the participants.
The Resale Shop opened in the early 2000s. We have seen so many different customers, employees, and volunteers come through, but the mission has always been the same. We want to give back to our community by offering great finds at affordable prices. Running a thrift shop is never easy, as you never know what products will be donated for you to sell. It is a constantly changing environment, but our exceptional staff is always up for a challenge. Month after month they successfully reach goals and maintain a tight shop. Our customers always leave happy and that is most important to us!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many remarkable parts of the city we’d want to show off. If the weather was nice, we’d start with an early morning walk along the Trinity River. We’d have to stop for breakfast at Press Café! Then we’d spend most of the day at the Fort Worth Zoo, one of the best in the country. We’d need dinner eventually, so we would have to take them to Joe T’s for a classic margarita on the patio. Day two would start at Sundance Square, with breakfast at Yolk and a tour of the sights and shopping around downtown, including the beautiful historic building that houses Center for Transforming Lives (parent nonprofit of The Resale Shop). Then we’d head over to The Stockyards — any out-of-towner has to witness the cattle drive at least once! We’d stop for lunch at one of the amazing restaurants in the Stockyards, then hop on the train for a Trinity River Excursion. After, we would window shop the local stores, bar hop along Exchange Avenue and branch off to Billy Bob’s to give them a true Texan experience. Day three would be full of shopping. We’d have to start on Camp Bowie to show off The Resale Shop, of course! Then, we would make our way down the boulevard to other shops. There is plenty of shopping on Camp Bowie, so we’d probably spend the whole day there. Next up would be the beautiful Botanic Garden followed by a day in the museum district. In the evenings, we would catch a couple of movies at the Rooftop Cinema or Coyote Drive In. Fort Worth offers an abundance of unique activities, so we’re positive they wouldn’t spend a single minute bored while on their trip.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would be honored to dedicate our shoutout to our phenomenal customers and volunteers. The Resale Shop could not be successful without these groups, and we are eternally grateful for the love and support they offer. Our regular and loyal customers come in with a smile and a story every time, and we love having the chance to get to know our neighbors personally. Our volunteers show up regularly, willing to work and help in whatever way we need support. Thank you to all of you who have supported our little shop throughout the years. We love and appreciate each of you.
