We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Elmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Like any other artist, the doubt of continuing is always faced through the journey. For me, our personal life kept growing faster than our actual dreams and to balance it, was hard. We moved to Denver for a year and half with my husband and 3 children. New to the city, new to all the adventures; we decided to take this risk and start Colorado life and get one step closer to our goals. We loved every sunrise and sunset it gives us, we grew more than ever!; We even got to remarry in front of our children! One of the best experiences we share as a family!
But in the midst of that, Covid happened and my business took a big hit, trying to market yourself in a new city when everyone is isolating can be difficult. But most importantly we were reminded the society we live in, millions of people losing their jobs and business, family getting sick, police brutality, black man getting murdered at a alarming rate like Ahmaud Arbery, (which my husband was at that same town 4 days after it happen, back in February of 2020 & the murderers were not convicted till May) ; the list can go on.
We knew then to keep going we had to re-evaluate and refocus the season we were in. Moving back home has been the biggest blessing, we let go and let God move us in any direction to align us to our path. We were able to buy our 1st home for our children, kept pursuing our business ventures and most importantly be back with family and friends.
Everyday is not a promise so I decided to live in the now and learn as much as I can to prepare for tomorrow. I am a firm believer if you give yourself predefined checkpoints, you can easily make a more reasoned choice. & If it doesn’t work out, the sun always gives us hope to try again tomorrow!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I get so excited capturing people’s lives! how cool is that, getting to work with people to capture their most intimate and treasured moments. Everyone has a story, a style and a voice! I want to continue to capture dope souls and translate their beauty with an image.
When I had my oldest, and was on maternity leave I would always capture her, play dress up and take pictures and post it for family and friends. I did it so much that they loved the way I would capture it! I started daydreaming and planning on how I can make a legit business from it. Investing in my craft was the best decision I ever made. 6 years later I’m so blessed with being able to create and capture people’s real lives. I have clients whom I’ve captured their engagement, wedding and then the birth of their child. It’s a beautiful thing to give to someone, a frozen piece of their journey with an image.
Has it been easy? Noooo, it has challenged me like no other. I am still failing and learning every day. Balancing mom/wife life with a business can be difficult but I’m determined to conquer my goals and continue my journey no matter the obstacles or set back it takes!
Overcoming challenges are growth checkpoints. They are there to grow personally or in the business ethic side. I always have an open mind to learn from it.
If there’s anything that I would like for you to know about me is that we are all human, one under the sun and we have the power to create and love all!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friends know when they come to Triple D to hang out, we have to go to Taco Ventana! The tacos and churros be hittin every time. Then, we would go to an art or science museum! Dallas has a lot to offer, their food selection around the city is amazing! You can go from shopping at the outlets to shopping at the bazaar. The amount of cultures that this city has, makes it an experience itself.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dear husband, Trey! From gifting me my very first camera to passionately supporting every aspect in my business; for that I’m forever grateful. He is my coach and the best supporter i can ever ask for! <3
Brandon Burton, the one that influenced everything from the very beginning. What camera I should buy, how to run a business, how to sell and getting me in the door in general. A lot of it is kudos to him. He has been the best example!
I get inspired by a lot of women-women who can make things happen, change their lives, create a difference, change their society, speak for others, take risks and overcome challenges… Michelle Ridner & Jenniffer Allen, is one of these women! Thank you ladies for all the aspiration!
The love from all my friends has been astronomical and has been an insanely huge part of my success. It’s all outta love and want to thank everyone that supports me! <3
