We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I am a mother of 4 children ranging in ages from 7 to 22 and the most important thing that I have done that has made greatest impact on them is finishing college. I had children young and have been through a lot in my life, but my kids have watched me work hard and manifest my goals and dreams. I found myself unemployed during the recession in 2008 and realized that I needed my degree so I went back to school. I worked full time, went to school at night and Saturday’s and graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 2014. I immediately started my graduate program and graduated with my MBA in 2016 as a single mother of four children. It was hard, there were a lot of late nights and early mornings but I did it, and my kids watched me work hard until I completed what I started.
I developed a love for entrepreneurship in college and my goal has always been to work for myself. I started this business with my kids, they are part owners because I want all the hard work to pay off by way of generational wealth. We don’t give up or make excuses in my household we get it done! My kids help with every event and are apart of the whole process in some way. I love passing on skills to them that they can use in the future.
What should our readers know about your business?
Modern Lux Events is my business, I am an event planner and designer. We plan one of the most memorable days in a couples life and we love every minute of it! We started our business during the pandemic, I was planning my own wedding and fell in love with the process. We were initially set for a destination wedding but the pandemic had other plans. We were set on our date of 7/17/2020 so we decided not to put our guest at risk and started making alternate arrangements. We had to change venues 3 times before settling on a golf course. Exactly thirty days from the date of our wedding they cancelled. I allowed myself one day to be sad and go through all the emotions and then I went to work, visiting every venue possible. We found the perfect space but it needed a lot of decor so I went to work. In less than 30 days we had a COVID safe wedding and it was everything I could have dreamed of.
Starting a business in the pandemic has had its positive and negative aspects. Since everything slowed down I was really able to focus on nothing but Modern Lux Events, I took every class I could because I believe in education, became a certified event planner/designer, learned florals and balloon installations. We opened our office in January 2021, and by April we had an additional space which is now our design studio. We started our business at a great time, things were opening up and people want to celebrate. We love bringing people together, celebrating love, and seeing smiles on peoples faces. I believe in servant leadership and this is our way of serving others!
There have been many challenges, with growth comes more obstacles. The pandemic has made it hard to forecast, we’ve had to cancel and postpone a few events but one of the most important thing that I have learned in business is you have to be flexible.
In a couple of months we will celebrate our 1 year anniversary! This has been an amazing ride so far, I have met some amazing people and we are continuing to grow and provide value added to our clients!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to eat! It’s simple I know but the people that I am closet with also share a love for food, Mexican is my favorite. It would depend on where they are from, I believe in customizing the itinerary to the person that is visiting. We would definitely visit downtown and Deep Elum, love Vidora and the oversized Margarita you can share is a must! My husband loves Pecan Lodge so we would definitely eat there on a Sunday afternoon. I love the vibe of Bishop Arts District, walk do a little shopping at some of the small boutiques. I absolutely love flowers so the Dallas Arboretum would be on the list along with the State Fair of Texas, so glad that it’s coming back this year. We would go to the Water Gardens in Ft. Worth and takes some pics or listen to a live band.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My kids have truly been my inspiration and motivation for starting this business. I learned so much from going to college and working for Corporate America simultaneously, I was able to put to use the concepts that I was learning which has really helped me in starting my business. My biggest supporter has been my husband, he has invested in our business financially and physically and has provided the most encouragement along the way!
