Meet Jayla Perry | Model, Content Creator, Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jayla Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jayla, what do you attribute your success to?
The key factor that has helped lead me to be a successful model is my authenticity and genuineness. From the day I chose to get in front of a camera, I remained Jayla and that instantly intrigued others: because that’s truly rare these days. When I decided to pursue creating I was battling a lot of different personal issues and went through way more as I continued to grow in the community. One thing that I noticed was there was no one like me. No one to inspire me or for me to look up to. I’m so passionate about what I do because I do it for the girls who don’t have anyone that looks like them. Chocolate girls face many adversities in this community and I refuse to let it stay that way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I first started modeling I took many “creative” breaks. I was distracted and depressed and really wanted to call everything quits. In the beginning it’s very easy to get discouraged and start comparing yourself to others. Not even knowing how many people are really comparing themselves to you. I’ve worked with many different creatives from the photographers, to music artists, makeup artists, and other models, and every single time they taught me that there is only one person who can do what I do. It was hard transitioning from a “collab model” to a “booked model”. I had to teach myself how to move with no team. I finally started recognizing my talents and worth once I became single in 2021. Last year was my rock bottom of the ocean year. It took lots of alone time, journaling, and prayer. It took years before the BOOKINGS started flowing to me, but I kept pushing. Being consistent and also working two jobs while trying to become a full time lash tech can get overwhelming, but we keep our eyes on the horizon over here. You can’t give up when you know you’re going to impact nations.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So being from Fort Worth there’s a lot of places I have yet to explore lol. When I do have time to go out, I like to take the girlies to deep ellum, try and find a poetry slam, watch a game at Turkey Dam or something. I’m really a nature girl at heart so I’m ready for the weather to warm up so I can go hiking and be at the park writing poems. (:
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The people in my story deserve more than a shoutout! They’ve held me down beyond words can explain. They’re my backbone, encouragement, and know how to keep me grounded and bring me back to reality. Shoutout to my family, (friends is a term I no longer use. If we’re close you’re my family and you know that), and my team Route 12. The confidence I have gained definitely came from y’all teaching me it’s okay to love myself. Y’all also taught me that there are still people in this world who have genuine intentions. I love y’all!
