We had the good fortune of connecting with Kandy Robertson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kandy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
This particular word “risk” has been a word that was a constant reminder of my “failures.” For a long time the thought of risk taking haunted me, the consequences was often used against me in a negatively. 17 years ago, I became a nurse, after I no longer was able to pursue art in college because I became pregnant. I knew I didn’t want to be a nurse forever. I had dreams of having my own business and being successful since I was a child. Thats because I aspired to have big beautiful things, things I never had because my family were refugees and we grew up poor. My biggest reason is I no longer wanted to struggle, but I was also someone who enjoyed thinking outside of the box. I didn’t want to live a “typical” 9-5 life, work, come home and then die. I always wanted more. I am a dreamer.

For the past 17 years, I’ve entertained many ideas, created many small businesses, became an actor, a model, I am also a human rights activist, an event coordinator, digital creator, and author. Which led me to network with many professionals that gave me many opportunities. But with all of these opportunities came “risks”. Risks that plagued my early part of my life where those closest to me would deem my risks, “too risky”. That all of these risks was not going to lead me anywhere but failures, risks that took time away from my family. That being risky devalued who I was as a mom. For years, I was told to give up creating new ideas and pursuing new ventures.

If I had listened, where would I be today? If I gave up on myself, would I be able to fulfill my dream and be successful as I am today? These risks, have paved the path and helped me gain new experiences and SKILLS that helped me OBTAIN the knowledge and honed my talents to not only help myself but others succeed as well! Failures in itself is a GOOD thing, without failures I would not have learned anything. No one ever gets it right the first time! In fact, the more I failed the faster I succeeded.

My perspective on risk taking has never changed over the years, the difference now is that I encourage it.

What should our readers know about your business?
2 years ago I decided to quit my 9-5 to pursue my social media marketing agency full time when I gave birth to my last child. I wanted to work from home and be there for my children. I missed out on a lot in their life chasing my dreams. I believed I had all the skills I needed to build my agency. My agency services include, social media management, courses, and 1:1 masterclasses to help business owners make more money on social media. What sets me apart is that everything I do for my clients I do for myself. My results are my own case studies. I have gone viral on many platforms, not once, or twice but almost every week. My skills comes from many years of expertise and but also using my creativity in following trends but making it my own. This honed my “eye” in deciphering new trends because I am willing to get with the times. I bring a fresh new perspective to businesses. Due to these accomplishments my agency has been awarded a national award, PRSA Award (Public Relations of America).

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love to eat, so we would probably take them to the best spots in town! What I like about the city is the culture and diversity of food, Like Cris & John, a Vietnamese street food with a Mexican twist! BBQ is what the state is known for, so BBQ spots like Cattleack BBQ thats open on 2 days out of the week! If they have kids, the Dallas Aboretum Plant Trials and the Dallaz Zoo, are definitely our favorites!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out to those who supported my multiple endeavors over the past several years, like all of my friends and followers online. Most importantly, my immediate family, my husband Nick Rob and my children who had to endure every new idea I had! And of course, those who didn’t believe I could, that was more motivation I needed for me to succeed. I also want to shout out my parents, for their sacrifices to create a life for me as a child as best they could in a foreign country. Growing up in America as a first generation has motivated me to build generational wealth and leave a legacy, so my future can have a better life and more opportunities!
