We had the good fortune of connecting with Jayla Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jayla, why did you pursue a creative career?
Well, I have always been very creative even as a child. I was not the most academic in school. Art interested me a lot. I started painting at a young age. High school, junior year, came around and I could not figure out what I wanted to do in life. I would take the personality test that helps you decide what career best fits you. Artist, fashion, and hairstylist would come up but I denied it. I felt like I needed to be a teacher or an accountant. I attended college for one semester, got into makeup, and came home and attended Paul Mitchell The School. That’s where it all started. My interest in art turned into makeup, and makeup turned into hair. I knew I found my calling because it was fun to me! It was all Gods plan.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think the thing that sets me apart is, I created a new name for my silk presses to “Mirror Press”, in order to brand myself. It’s makes people wonder, “What is a mirror press?”. It’s just a press by Jayla, HA! I got to where I am by networking, taking classes, praying asking God for guidance, and support from others. It was not easy. There were times that I was afraid to take risks. There were times where I thought investing in my business was “too much money”. But it definitely paid off! I want the world to know that I have such a passion for what I do. I love making women or men feel good about themselves. I’m also probably one of the goofiest stylists you’ll ever meet lol!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite restaurants in Dallas are Moxies, Hero, Flower Child, Ocean Prime, the list goes on and on! If I had a friend to come in town, I’d take them to the museum of illusions downtown Dallas or bowling. Something fun and interactive! Food would be the main attraction though!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first like to give a shoutout God! He has opened so many doors for me and given me the gift of doing art through painting, makeup, and hair! Secondly, I want to thank my parents, Carole and Jamell, for supporting me throughout all the obstacles I went through. They encouraged me the entire way and did everything that they could do to help me. I want to thank my sisters, Jordan and Janyece, and the rest of my family and friends for their love and support throughout my entire journey! I always want to thank my mentors in the past that have given me advice about makeup, hair, or anything to help my business succeed. Thank you to allllll of my beautiful clients who trust and support me even when they are not in the chair. Lastly, I would like to thank Crickett Tools for making me one of their brand ambassadors! They are ALWAYS showing support and providing me with the best tools to help make my clients hair beautiful. I love every last one of you!
