We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Gutknecht and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacob, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
So far in my photography career, consistency has been the biggest habit that’s helped me grow. I usually post every week and always make sure I have something lined up to shoot. I’ve always been a go-getter, for example, one day I saw a sign for a D2 conference championship while running errands. I did some research, found the media contact, and ended up with a media pass. I used a similar process to get into Overtime 7v7, which was huge for exposure and networking. At those events, I collaborated with big teams and pages, which really helped me get my name out there.

Still, the biggest thing that’s worked for me is word of mouth. I always make sure every player gets their photos, and I make real connections at every event I go to — especially at Overtime. I also try to be one of the first photographers to send pictures out after events, but I don’t rush if it means losing quality. I’ll take that extra time if I need to. I’ve taught myself a lot by just going out and doing it, but I’ve also gotten great advice from my mom, who’s a professional photographer too.

I don’t just want to take nice photos but I want to make sure people have a memory to cherish and be proud of what they’ve achieved . That mindset, combined with staying consistent and showing up, is what’s helped FramesByJacob grow the most.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My style and eye for detail and action are what set me apart in photography. This allows me to deliver unique, high-quality shots that truly stand out and capture real energy in every moment. What I’m most proud of is the name I’ve built for myself. I started doing this just for fun, and now it’s my job. Consistency is what got me here, but it wasn’t easy. It took late nights editing & early mornings shooting while constantly pushing myself to improve. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that the work will always speak for itself. If you stay focused, stay consistent, and let your photos do the talking, you’ll get to where you need to be.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places to eat is Grandscape or The Star both are lively, social spots with great food and plenty of activities. For fun, I’d probably take my friend to a sports event, whether it’s the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, or Frisco RoughRiders. We’d also swing by The Shops at Legacy, which is a really fun area with lots of nice places to eat and things to do. No matter which game or spot we hit, we’d have an amazing time soaking in the energy and atmosphere.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First I would like to thank god cause none of this would be possible without him. But I also want to give a big thank you to my mom (@photographybyamylou), a professional photographer who sparked my passion and helped shape who I am today. I also want to thank every client I’ve worked with—they’ve trusted me to deliver and helped me grow with each opportunity. And a special shoutout to my close friend and fellow photographer, Reed Rymsza (@shotby.reed), for always supporting me, pushing me creatively, and helping me improve. I’m grateful for everyone who’s been part of this journey.
