We had the good fortune of connecting with Heath Fewell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heath, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
One of the strongest principles that I try to stand behind is staying true to myself. In today’s day and age, it’s hard to not get caught up in the ideas and success that is portrayed online by others. Social media can be detrimental to one’s self-perception. These people had to start somewhere and their success has grown over the years. PEOPLE ONLY POST THEIR SUCCESS, NOBODY POSTS THEIR DOWNFALLS. I try to remind myself to stay true to the ideas and creativity that I love and try not to rush the success that will come in the near future. When focusing on the present, the success may be hard to spot, but when taking a step back and looking at where I started, I have come to far. That is something that I will never forget and will be a constant reminder to never give up.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
To be honest, it all comes from practice. When I first started taking pictures, I took so much pride in my work. However, through taking pictures constantly and allowing myself to change styles and grow as a photographer, it has made me able to developed things within that I love even more. When looking at my old editing style, it’s almost hard to believe that those pictures are from the same photographer. This was not something that was easy because constantly trying to developed something can be slightly be discouraging when the end result is not something you like. Trial and error can be lengthy, but the “ending” result is magnificent and heartwarming. I have learned that quality over quantity along with staying true to oneself is the key to success. People will follow you because of your authenticity. People gravitate toward new ideas that aren’t obvious replicas. It may not seem like it, but there is a group of “fans” for everyone; they just have to find you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am such an adventure person. Although there are many of my favorite spots that I would typically go, I still have a list of new places I want to try. I am all about new experiences! What’s a better way to try something new than with people that have not tried these activities either? With that being said, I would probably pick an activity, food or drinking place, or whatever it may be at random and go with the flow. I am not a scheduled person when it comes to my free time. I find this helps alleviate the “stress” that can be built up through working on an intense schedule from business ventures.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are honestly too many to name. I have followed photographers and influencers for years and I am still finding new ones that help mold my creative thoughts. Seeing the way things are curated on their end has helped me see what I like and don’t like in pictures. This has helped shape the style of photography that I want to portray to my audience and helped guide the way I like to have my clients pose. These same ideas that I put into my photography is taken into account when I post pictures on my personal page. I like symmetry and order and through that I follow and ongoing theme. That theme may change from time to time, but there is still an overall pattern that is being followed.
