We had the good fortune of connecting with Haixi Ren and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Haixi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started REN HAIXI as soon as I graduated from college in 2020. I wanted to build a luxury brand, which focuses on sustainability, innovation and inclusivity. I am extremely interested in art history, my research of abstract expressionism has been a major inspiration for my first few collections. Unique textile designs and sensual silhouettes have become REN HAIXI’s signature design language. I would say my brand is now known for creating zero-waste couture.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
During my experience working in the fashion industry in NYC, I realized that textile waste is a huge problem in every fashion house. To solve this problem, I need to break the traditional cut and sew technique and redesign the garment construction process that is 100% 0 waste. Furthermore, I wanted to utilize discarded fabric scraps produced by big fashion houses and turn them into couture pieces. I have collected dead stock fabrics from local vendors and worked with Fabscrap to rework them into couture pieces. I launched my brand in the middle of the pandemic, I could not do any runway or exhibition to present my very first collection. I seeked opportunities on instagram and tried to connect with people by sharing behind the scenes, process photos and my daily routine as a designer. Luckily my very first collection “painterly” got reposted and discovered by major stylists and publications, which I considered a very good start for the launch of REN HAIXI.
My dream is to make my brand accessible to all people. I want to establish REN HAIXI into a world-class brand which is sustainable and inclusive. My 5 years goal is to create my unique production and selling methods which would allow me to stay as close to 0 waste as possible on a much larger scale. We want to be able to produce Ready-to-wear collections and work with luxury e-commerce platforms and retailers. I want more people to wear my designs rather than just celebrities. I would rather take little steps forward than demolish omy core belief in sustainability which keeps REN HAIXI’s designs so unique. My 10 years goal is to establish REN HAIXI into a multidisciplinary brand which specializes in areas beyond fashion. I want to expand into interior and product design, and implement my zero waste practices into all my creations. My vision for sustainability and inclusivity will continue to be just as important as my aesthetic artistry. Ultimately, I aim to inspire the industry at large to rethink fashion as it currently stands, to focus on creating rather than simply producing

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love upper west side in NYC, I love enjoying a good cocktail with Central Park view. I love taking my friends to my favorite Chinese restaurant Blue Willow and grab drinks at the Living Room. I love going to galleries and museums, I go to the Whitney museum every month to get inspired. I love how every time I go out I discover some new in the city. NYC has been a main inspiration for my work.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I consider myself extremely lucky to have people helping me along the way, whether it is celebrity stylists who discovered me on instagram or editors who are willing to promote my designs on magazines. The journey has been full of surprises and fulfillment so far, I really enjoy working with like-minded creatives in the industry.
