Meet George Koehl | Songwriter & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with George Koehl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi George, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Garland, TX, just outside of Dallas. I grew up in a large family. Including my parents and six siblings, we had a household of nine! If you’ve ever seen the movie Cheaper by the Dozen, that was essentially my life! Things were often quite hectic, with the mix of different ages and personalities sometimes leading to abject chaos around the home. However, I wouldn’t trade my upbringing for anything! Growing up in that environment taught me invaluable lessons about communicating, compromising, getting along with diverse personalities, and learning to be part of a team, all of which are skills I constantly utilize now as an artist and collaborator. Additionally, my parents were always my number one supporters in my myriad creative escapades, consistently helping to provide opportunities for me to learn and grow as an artist. I’m so thankful for my family because I wouldn’t be who I am without them!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Christian/Gospel singer and songwriter who writes songs for the Church. I’m passionate about seeing God’s Church singing theologically rich and artistically beautiful songs. That’s why when I write songs, I don’t avoid theologically complex or niche topics in my writing. In my experience, music is the language of the soul, and it communicates truths deeper and more universally than almost any other medium. So, I do my best to address theological concepts through a Biblical framework.
Considering projects already released, I’m most proud of Psalms from the Well, the album I helped write with The Worship Initiative last year. Regarding unreleased projects, however, I have recently started putting out music under my solo artist profile and have several singles planned for release in the coming months that I’m excited about!
I started off leading worship and writing songs at my local church, and through songwriting, I began to connect with so many wonderful people in the DFW area. I’ve met some incredible songwriters, producers, and artists. Through those relationships, I’ve learned so much! I’m still in the early stages of my career, but I can attest that having a community of like-minded creatives to learn from and do life with makes creating so much better!
The biggest lesson I’ve learned as a creative is the importance of collaboration. Collaborating makes every artist better and almost always improves their work. Collaboration also helps artists to expand their horizons and opens their minds to new ideas, perspectives, and techniques. Most of all, when you have true friends, their success becomes your success, and vice versa. True friends champion, encourage and help each other, even when it won’t necessarily benefit them. We all need people we can count on to have our backs in the highs and lows of life.
I want the world to know about Jesus! I want people to know that there’s a God who loves us, and despite the ways we all fall short, He’s made a way for us to be free from our mistakes and live with Him. Ultimately, the reason I write songs is to praise God and to help others praise Him too. I hope when people hear my songs, they’ll hear Jesus speaking to them.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to The Worship Initiative! They are a worship collective and worship resources company located in Dallas. Last year, I was part of their residency program. I formed lifelong friendships there, wrote over 30 songs, and released an album with them! That was the first full-length album that I helped write and sing on. It was an incredible experience! I have to give them my shoutout!
