We had the good fortune of connecting with Gaylan Hendricks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gaylan, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Work ethic first and foremost. Some would have called me a “workaholic” at certain points in my career. I would totally disagree with that. Work is not spelled “FUN” for a reason, but it doesn’t mean that you don’t and won’t have FUN if you truly love what you do and your passion for it will create the environment that makes you want to get up and do the same things everyday. While I don’t feel I work as hard as I did when I started, the truth is I put in more hours now than ever, but because I TRULY LOVE what I do and know not only that I am helping others navigate something like “health insurance” that’s not easy, but also seeing other people we work with become so successful much faster than they had ever thought possible. I think having someone who believes in YOU and SHOWS YOU how to do something is always better than just being TOLD TO DO SOMETHING. I think my happy heart and positive attitude draw others in. I was taught by one of my very first mentors that ‘CAN’T” would not be tolerated and I believe getting rid of that word early in my career was a “game changer”. I have always known that I can do anything that I really want to do and set my mind to. Doing everything I do with the I “Can do it”, happiness and positivity is what gives one pure JOY. Growing up with a supportive Father that taught me I didn’t NEED a man, but should WANT a partner, I also think has given me the CONFIDENCE that I have had to make something out of everything I have ever wanted in order to know I can do it by myself, but I don’t have to if I don’t want to.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the CEO of Senior Security Benefits, Inc., founded in 2001. I think what sets our company apart from others is that we are a family ran business with a lot of friends who have become our FRamily. We also allow people to practice their faith and do not condemn those who wish not to, but I think the fact that we talk about Jesus, christianity and give God credit everyday for our success also sets us apart. We are also a business that was started and operated by a female, but is encouraged everyday by her two male counterparts who believe the same way she does. We love what we do and I think it shows. We also believe in the Golden Rule. When this business was started, I told my husband and other business partner, Taylor Martin, that the day we aren’t having fun is the day we need to “shut up shop”. Fortunately, we still have a ton of fun in an industry where the government is always trying to “mess it up” instead of staying away and letting people “have the plans they truly want”. I think the fact that we defended our clients in a federal lawsuit, explained to the federal government why the plans we sell are so important and then won the lawsuit on “appeal” to prove these plans are needed for our clients is probably the one thing that sets us apart from other insurance agents, agencies, marketing companies and carriers, we not only did the talk, but we walked the walk and I believe that the judges, justices and government learned something from us that they didn’t know about the “health insurance reform”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I would start in my little town of Aledo, Texas and show them what “Friday night lights” is all about. Aledo is a 9 time state championship winner. Football is Texas. I would then probably take them to a mexican place that I love in the stockyards and then to Billy Bob’s for a concert. There is nothing better than Fort Worth, Texas, on a Friday night. Fort Worth is full of great new restaurants ran by some fabulous chefs that I have been able to call friends over the last few years, so we definately would not lack great food. Over a week period of time, they would obviously get to see our company, meet our employees and have some fun with us there and then I would take them to the Ronald McDonald House of Fort Worth where I get to serve as a board of director. I have chaired the Roadhouse event the last two years along with my husband, Dan Hendricks, and co-chairs Larry and Karen Anfin. We always have a great time. CoVid didn’t allow us to have it this year, but we have pushed it to 2021 with some great country entertainment. Anyone I have ever had the pleasure of taking to the house and having them take a tour, come out a changed person. Of course, while you’re in Cowtown, we would have to have BBQ, more Tex Mex and take a stroll around downtown.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, I would have to start with my Father. He was the most amazing sales person I have ever known and he still is. He passed away in 1990 at age 52, but the character that I have today is because my Father believed I could do something that I didn’t even “know I wanted to do”. He always thought I should be in insurance and sales. When I applied to a company that I thought was a pharmaceutical company and instead ended up being an insurance agency in Lubbock, Texas, needless to say my Dad was thrilled. I told him I was hired to be in the commission accounting department, his reply was “you won’t be there long”. You belong in sales. I proceeded to go to work everyday wanting to be over the business department and everyday his response was a shake of the head and was, “no, you need to be in sales”. He handed me two books, Zig Ziglar’s “See you at the Top” and Norman Vincent Peale’s, ” The Power of Positive Thinking”. I remember the latter being a red book, tattered and worn, but WOW the best book ever. It set me on the course of knowing that everything you do in life has to be done with a positive attitude. During the 80’s and 90’s, I listened to Zig Ziglar over and over. It was amazing hearing someone who sounded like me, be so energetic and so powerful. I knew one day that I could take insurance to another level. Hopefully, to be a motivational speaker and inspire others to do and be GREAT in an industry I totally fell in love with and didn’t even see it coming.. My parents had been and until the day they died my biggest fans. I am blessed to have such a great family, team, husband, son, daughter in law, business partner and the most amazing grandchildren that God has put on this earth. The agents that I get to coach, inspire and work with motivate me each and every day to be a better version of myself than I was the day before.
