We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kimberly Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Kimberly, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

Enduring the disjointed experience of serving within a mental health agency yet working in dysfunctional workplace cultures convinced me that this could be done better. I witnessed myself and others giving and serving way beyond their emotional and physical capacity. Staff were fried as they tried to provide superior and ethical services to customers and have a life. This inspired me to create an agency in honor of my grandmother’s legacy to help 5500 women overcome burnout and transform the workplace culture of 100 companies. I wanted to serve people in a way that cut through the red tape and prying eyes of insurance companies. I didn’t want them to have to worry about the impact of receiving a diagnosis, asking for permission to get support, or wondering if they were covered. I wanted to work through a model of wellness rather than disease.

The catalyst that gave me the courage to start my own business was because I was going to be demoted and asked to work for a director who was my peer. I handed in my resignation and applied to legally register my business that same day. It was also the best time because I just had my second child. The stress of trying to be there for infant children and run a community mental health agency would often demand too much of my time and energy. I felt as if no one was happy. I barely saw my children, my husband was far away, and I worked in an emotionally and verbally abusive atmosphere. I needed to have peace in my environment.

I first became inspired to open my own business during graduate school. I began a group practice with other therapists in Southern California. However, I got married and moved to the South. Later, at another agency, I saw the money that the agency made as a result of me providing service and was stunned to realize that my hourly wage was less than 20% of the fee received. This sparked the idea that working for someone limited my earning potential.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Coaching, counseling, and consulting are the cornerstone of Leadership and Resilience Consultants (LRC). We provide in-person and virtual services and are based in Charlotte, North Carolina. We support banking, healthcare, and technology businesses to develop healthier workplace cultures using research backed, evidenced-based practices while also supporting individuals to engage in behavior choices that enhance their personal and professional relationships.

LRC has a particular focus to address burnout, employee development, DEI (diversity, equity, & inclusion), mental health, mental resilience, and healthy workplace culture. These services are offered through corporate retreats, brief training sessions, keynote speeches, and executive and group coaching.

Our coaching services specializes in assisting women to recover from burnout. The moniker Dr. Burnout is often used to encapsulate our desire to eradicate the burnout culture that is so prevalent.

Women are particularly impacted by burnout because they tend to have multiple roles within the home caring for aging parents, children, and caregivers to extended family members. We often find that women suffer from burnout due to a multitude of reasons both interpersonal, intrapersonal, societal, and cultural. On the intrapersonal aspect we focus on increasing energy and productivity, exploring mindset, imposter syndrome, and boundaries. Our services offer opportunities to participate in adventure retreats, a community, and individual support.

Our counseling services are virtual and offers couples and individual therapy in GA, FL, MI, NC, and SC. We focus on assisting individuals adjust to life’s transitions especially divorce, remarriage, blended families, communication problems, and coping with infidelity. We also offer couple and individual retreats. Our teams has a range licensed and pre-licensed master’s level professionals.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you like outdoor adventure the best place to go in Charlotte, NC is to The National Whitewater Center. There are ziplines, obstacle courses, paddleboard, kayaking, whitewater rafting, and biking.

If you want a chill afternoon to unwind, the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens never disappoint.

I personally love the Discovery Science Museum, it’s for all ages.

A great place for rooftop bar cocktails before a trip to the jazz bar is Fahrenheit.

In the evening you should journey to Middle C Jazz in downtown Charlotte for live jazz.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d attribute a great deal of my success to the principles and skills that I learned as a United States Marine. The military laid the foundation for my courage, dedication, integrity, confidence, and determination.

The Marine Corps pushes you to your physical, emotional, and social limits. I gained confidence in leading, marching, shooting weapons, navigating terrain, excelling in physical fitness, and a willingness to throw myself into new opportunities. One of the unofficial mantras was “Semper Gumby”, to always be flexible. We adapt and overcome in any situation. This teaches endurance and perseverance.

There are so many times as an entrepreneur that you need to pivot to reach your goal or destination. I couldn’t have a business for over a decade and not go through scary times and moments when I wanted to give up. The Marine Corps instilled values in me that are lifelong.
