We had the good fortune of connecting with DeVonte’ “Deeor” Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeVonte’ “Deeor”, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are very important! Not only to bring faith to yourself, but risks can lead to even bigger results. I have taken many risks for my fashion brand (B.o.R) like moving to LA, dropping out of school, and even taking a leap at NYFW shows. Risks have given me many great opportunities that I wouldn’t have if I always played every decision safe or as I wasn’t good enough. There are always risks when you want to achieve something higher. Risks can seem frightening as though you may lose something or it seems “too big” to achieve, but the greatest moments come from taking risks! If you are taking risks for a greater cause, make sure to always have faith in yourself! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the creator of the fashion/film brand B.o.R By DeVonte’ Harris. I am most proud of the fact that I am a black man who is able to use his gifts to inspire. I was able to create my brand and believe in it. I am proud of the fact that I never gave up no matter how tough life got following my path of dreams. I created this business with my own 2 hands from the bottom up and I am blessed to look at how far I’ve come in a few years. I am ecstatic for what the future holds. Professionally, I started doing assistant styling work in LA in 2017. Then from there, I started doing creative direction work for brands which help me build connections. I met my seamstress along with different manufacturing clothing companies that helped teach me the process on constructing a garment. Fast forward 2 years with the knowledge I learned, I now have under my belt 2 fashion shows (NYC/LA), I have about 40 plus garments made that I have designed, and now I get to do magazine interviews with you guys! My whole path of life was not easy but all worthwhile. I felt like my close ones didn’t support me as much as I wanted so I moved to California. Things continued to be rough there including homelessness and just feeling lost in life. In these tough times I had good times, but before the good times came I had to keep my faith and keep believing in me! The only way to overcome tough times is with faith. Whenever you are feeling uninspired or wanting to give up remember why you started. Remember works without faith is dead. I learned that you can’t sit back and wait for someone to tell you you’re going to be great. You have to believe in yourself and go achieve. Life is going to come with ups and downs, highs and lows, light and darkness, but remember everything is a test and you must pass these tests in life to achieve greater. Always show love and generosity. Treat people with respect. Once you reach a level of spirit within yourself, you know you are destined for great things. Ask yourself, is it worth it? I want the world to know that this brand is love. Before fashion or designing, people will know that I gave it my all and I changed the world in more ways than 1. I hope people take my actions, not just my words, and realize that they can change the world just like me. Secondly, I want people to know that my story made me who I am and my rough times is what made me become one of the top fashion brands this world has ever seen in the future.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I am a seafood fanatic so I know for sure we are going to restaurants where they have excellent seafood. I would go to a few museums around the DFW area. I like watching the sunsets, so maybe visiting a hill or a garden and taking pictures. Basketball is my favorite sport so we have to see a Mavs game. We got to go check out some fabric stores too of course! Maybe some arcade games and fun kid stuff. I also like going to designer’s pop up shops or events that bring creatives together. I am sort of boring so I don’t really do too much other than peaceful activities. I am always open to new things to try!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes of course! I want to dedicate this Shoutout to God, my loving family, B.o.R, my brother Rado, Tamera, and my “gang gang” of friends from San Marcos. To my favorite musical and worldly inspirations that helped build me as a creative and loving person. Last but not least, any and everybody who has ever supported or believed in me.
