We had the good fortune of connecting with Deja Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deja, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that taking risks is a part of building your career and who you are. Without risk, there is no chance for success or failure to teach you the important life lessons needed to be the best version of yourself. I took the risk of dropping everything I knew to move to New York City. I moved out there without knowing anyone and have money to my name. While my time out there was hard, I gained experiences and opportunities I didn’t even know existed. I became a more confident and solidified artist, and I created a new life and name for my creativity! My career is based on risk, to know that no matter what, the outcome will teach you something of value is what drives me most. I’ve learned to be brave and confident, knowing that sometimes the worst thing you can hear is ‘no’ and to keep moving forward.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work is loud, bold, and playful! I work a lot with food. I love to illustrate nostalgic food items that have come up in my childhood. I love to create whimsical sceneries that tell a story. I am most proud of my use of color, and I try to make my closet in real life reflect my art. Getting to where I am today has not been easy, but nothing worth having comes easy! I am happy to have gone through my challenges and tribulations to get to where I am now!
I would love for the world to know how important color is. In a world where things can easily be black and grey, I love to wear bright clothes that distinguish me from a mile away. My brand is all about spreading creativity and colorful vibes! My Story is all about embracing who you are!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Meow-Wolf absolutely would be my first stop! To fall into a universe full of art and quirkiness is so awesome!
Of course, The Dallas Art Musume would be on the list. all the weird sculptures spread around town would be fun!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest shoutout goes to my mother. She has always supported my vision of being an artist and has allowed me to be me. She has helped me with so many of my struggling artist fazes!
I always shout out music! I get through my most challenging deadlines with help from my late-night Spotify sessions.
