We had the good fortune of connecting with Connie Clotworthy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Connie, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Worthy Beyond Purpose brings mindfulness & meditation practices to children around the world.

When we began in 2018, the motivating factor was all of the school shootings. One after the other. In Feb of 2018, The Stoneman Douglas shooting took place, where the shooter was a former student claiming shooting guns was his form of therapy, The supposed solution at the time from our officials was to arm our teachers! I knew something had to start NOW.

I made a facebook post stating.. How about we don’t arm our teachers, how about we arm our students with the tools they need to deal with their emotions? And from there we began.

Looking at the gun violence and where we are today… this is prevalent now more than ever. The thing about this work, its preventive. We start calming the chaos before it even starts.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Worthy Beyond Purpose is a non-profit. Our goal is to be accessible to everyone regardless of demographic or location.

We spent our first year solely volunteering anywhere and everywhere that would have us. After-school programs in Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA & A Place Called Home. We did multiple kids events. We were everywhere. In this year we built our curriculum. We saw what worked, what didn’t work. It was a beautiful process. We participated in a summer camp in Jamaica, which we have now been a part of for the last 3 years. Everything was out of our own individual pockets. I was a full time restaurant worker. I had been in the restaurant business for over 20 years. Its where I made my money. Money that funded my passion, and my life’s work.

In 2019 we were finally making our way into the school system. This was a huge challenge because so many places told us, we don’t have funding or the time in our day for this kind of teaching. Slowly but surely, more and more were seeing, there is no time to NOT have these teachings in our school day. It was a start, and we were thrilled.

In 2020 when the pandemic shut everything down, Worthy Beyond Purpose immediately jumped to an online platform. We got to go through these unprecedented, very challenging and confusing times, together, with kids! What a gift. We taught two classes a day, Mon-Friday. The classes were filled with kids, sharing their worries and fears.

We teach breathing techniques, efficient communication skills, ways to move your body and how to work through your feelings and not just bury them. We teach positive affirmations and help kids to see the superhero in themselves. We’ve integrated creative arts to show kids how to take mindfulness and meditation into their everyday lives. And we have so much fun doing it.

I’ll never forget, I had an 8 year old tell me all about her panic attacks and how she was greatly suffering and scared. After about three weeks of being in classes and learning some new skills, she said to me… “How do I teach this to my younger brother and my family?” That was the moment for me, where I knew there was no going back.

No going back to the restaurant. From this moment on, teaching kids these invaluable life skills was the only work for me now. Trusting in the Universe and keep moving forward with this work.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well everything is a little different these days post Covid.

I would take my friends to Malibu beach to do some surfing and lounging. I would take them to Manhattan Beach Post and Fishing with Dynamite to eat, two of my absolute favorite restaurants with Chef David LeFevre. I would also take them to Hallowed Ground Meditation Studio in Marina DelRey for sound bath and breath work. We would do some yoga on the beach and definitely hike Temescal Canyon. I would LOVE to spend sometime in Joshua Tree with anyone visiting as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Landmark and my coach Spencer Stander. Than you for all the guidance, support and knowledge, helping me see through my vision and create the foundation.

HUGE shoutout to the team that helped create this dream into a reality. Day after day, week after week, we created this… TOGETHER. Jasmine Carey, Jessie Brown & Danielle White.
