We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsey Cartwright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsey, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business honestly wasn’t on my mind until i would hear my mom always say…” Maybe working for someone is not good for you”… I would always give her a crazy look and laugh. I use to say my mom did not know what she was talking about but, we all know moms know! However, my mom was right. I complained about working for someone all the time. It wasn’t that I was not good at doing my jobs, i was great actually. I was just passionate about my dreams and what God has for me. And with God I knew i could do all things i dreamed about. Now here I am a few years later and I work for myself as a hairstylist and dance choreographer. Teaching and sharing my love for hair and dance.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I grew up dancing and have always had a love and passion to dance. Dance was always first actually, then doing hair. To be completely honest I did not want to do hair at first. It was my dad who pushed me to stay with it. I knew I could do hair and was really good at it but the interest was not there. I wanted to focus on dance. So I created Divine Dance. I choreograph for local artist, perform/minister, dance videos, teach dance workshops and help develop dance ministries… The more I got into hair, the more I started to love and develop a passion about it. I love that I can make someones day just by helping them feel good. Making connections, getting to know people, having great conversations and also sharing a positive vibe of love and care. And thats what StylesByChels is all about. Im excited that I get the opportunity to do both teach dance and do hair. But I would have to say getting here was not easy. Trying to juggle two different careers and schedules can be tough. If it was not for God, my parents and my husband I don’t think I would’ve made it this far. GOD is how I overcame all challenges and even current challenges. Lessons I have learned are being consistent. Consistency flows off into all areas of your life and that was and still at times a challenge. StylesByChels and Divine Dance is your one stop shop. I see it like this, come learn and take dance class; and once its time for the performance come and get your hair and make up done and now you are ready for the show!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love food so we will start with a brunch at Snooze A.M. Eatery. Then take a trip to the Fort Worth Zoo. Grab some ice cream from Cold Stones. Do a little shopping at the Tanger Outlets or North East Mall. Grab more food at OC Burger in North Richland Hills. and end with a Fun night at Main Event or karaoke.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give all glory and praise to God!! Everything I’ve done and accomplished thus far is because of God. I also want to shout out my amazing husband. He has been my number one supporter since I started my own thing. He is truly the one who has pushed me out of my comfort zone, challenged me to go above and beyond and to make moves that have great impacts. Ryan you are the greatest! I love you so much! Thank You.
