We had the good fortune of connecting with Charissa Menken and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charissa, is there something you believe many others might not?
The idea that having a large following on instagram or social media will dictate the success of your business. I think that a lot of success can come from meeting the right people at the right time – networking. Of course a following can help, but more importantly staying engaged with your community and pouring into your education are all more important than having a large following.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I want people to know that I am always striving for excellence and I’m a life long learner. I’m continually learning how to streamline and grow my business to the next level. The market is extremely saturated with photographers and creatives but what I think sets me apart is my experience, skills, and overall personality. When you’re working with me I want you to know I understand your vision – I will always try my very best to make that a reality for you!
I’ve been in the back of a C130’s snapping videos and photos of airborne soldiers jumping from planes, I’ve been a resident artist at a studio creating a large coalition of work, I’ve had the privilege to work with small brands, and shooting many events and weddings. All these experiences have shaped my knowledge and skills that it takes to be a professional photographer.
What I wan’t people to know about my brand is that I am not afraid of trying something new but also I carry a breadth of knowledge and experience that I want my clients to feel comfortable trusting me with the vision.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would probably plan a fun day outdoors paddle boarding at one of the nearby lakes or go for a nice long hike and picnic. It would depend on the friend but a day where we can go to day spa or check out Haven or Jungle – my two favorite yoga studios! After we could go explore Bishop Arts and get tacos and apps at Taco y Vino, maybe a nightcap at Atlas or Lady Love.
I’m always scouring the Dallas Love List for the best new spots, Surf Camp in the East Quarter is also the perfect place for photo ops and a great view of the city! I’m very much a wherever the wind takes me – jazz night at Triumphs or find a concert for an indie artist in Deep Ellum, let’s go!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wan’t to thank all my friends that have let me practice taking photos of them over the years, I truly couldn’t be where I’m at now without your help.
Also all my college professors – the ones that got me at least, you’re the reason I’d consider teaching one day.
