We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Clapp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cameron, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Growing up as a kid, I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur of some sort . It would interest me to see how successful business owners conducted their affairs day in and day out. At the time I did not understand, but watching these people conduct business as a child prepared me for owning my own business today. There are two main throught processes that led me down the path of entrepreneurship. The first being that I have the heart of a servant. I love to provide excellent customer service and attempt to solve problems for individuals and there’s no better place to do that than at your own place of business. The second main reason I wanted to start my own business was to provide employment opportunities for those in need and eventually create enough wealth for myself to have ample amounts of free time to do the activities I enjoy day in and day out.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The creation of Clapp Clapp Clean, LLC happened because I was uncomfortable in my current life position. I found myself unhappy and uninspired working overnight in a factory day in and day out. Although a decent job on paper with “good benefits” I was absolutely miserable and unfulfilled.
In the beginning, there was no easy part about running a small cleaning business. My first cleaning account I severely underbidded myself for the amount of work I was due to provide. I often found myself understaffed and would have to sleep in my car after working 12 hours overnight to see that accounts were getting cleaned on time and properly as I began to grow.
After about a year of micromanaging cleaning accounts I finally was burned out and out of necessity learned how and who to hire and what systems to implement to continue providing a high quality service.
What I would like the world to know about Clapp Clapp Clean and my story in particular is that you don’t have to “reinvent” the wheel in order to be successful. A simple idea, backed by good work ethic and good customer service changed my life. I was stuck working in a factory overnight for years with no end in sight on a assembly line until I decided to make a decision and follow through on it.
Because I took action and was intentional I now have plenty of free time and can provide different opportunities to those around me which is very fulfilling. I want the people to know that it can happen for you as well!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Welcome to Kansas City! We are a small community connected by our football and baseball teams. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.
The first place you need to stop directly off the highway or leaving the airport is Gates Barbecue. Gates is a staple here in Kansas City and almost everyone that visits goes to eat there.
Next, Kansas City has beautiful scenery and bike trails. I personally enjoy being outside during spring and summer months and our city offers amazing trials along the Missouri River.
Last, depending on what type of music your into I would like to take you to our 18th and vine district. This part of the city offers a variety of night life, restaurants and also serves as a local hangout where people can congregate outside, listen to music, and show off their cars.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One person in particular I would like to highlight is a gentleman by the name of Al Winder. Mr. Winder is a life long mentor and father figure in my life. During my upbringing Al surrounded me by different entrepreneurs and business minded individuals (most notably a large bus company out of Landover, Maryland) which allowed me to learn things such as voice inflection, the proper way to shake someone’s hand, and common business practices. Al has been a influential and instrumental part of who I have become today as a business leader.
