We had the good fortune of connecting with Callie Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Callie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I discovered my love for baking at a very young age. I can remember my mom placing me on a chair and spending time with her baking during the holidays. Those memories of happiness, joy, and love are why I make confectionaries today. It was only when I had my daughter who is autistic that made me take the next steps in my baking career. I wanted to ensure that I left a legacy for her where she will always have a place to work and give her love back to the community. After her younger sister was born, who loves to bake and is in training to take over the business one day; My husband and I knew this was a way to give them something they could one day make their own, Taste Our Sweets Bakery is not just a business, but a true family affair. We provide a unique experience of southern cooking, superior customer service, and treats that are baked with our customer in mind.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

By day, I am a Director of Program management in the healthcare industry who also serves as my community’s local baker! It is not easy balancing the two (full-time director and baker), but my goal is to open a brick-and-mortar store and work exclusively with my family. I have dreamed of owning a bakery, so to know it is in reach gets me super pumped. The journey to owning my business has been anything but easy. There have been many bumps and bruises along the way, but each part of my journey prepared me for this moment. To overcome my challenges there was a lot of prayer, inner-reflection, family support, dedication, and my continued drive to succeed. There were many days, I felt overwhelmed, in over my hand, and debated daily whether I should give up. But I am always reminded of Jim Valvanos message on the ESPYS, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up” (Valvano,1993,8:35). To know he was only given a short time to live, he gave this speech that would go down in history (he passed away a short time after). I know it sounds cliche, but sometimes a simple statement can change a person’s mindset. For this reason, I feel what sets me apart from others is my willingness to meet people where they are and have genuine empathy regardless of who they are and where they come from. I want people to know that my brand is centered around food, family, love, and acceptance.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

If my best friend was visiting in town, I’d take them to the following:

1. African American Museum of Dallas
2. Deep Ellum Historical District
3. Visit the Reunion Tower Observation Deck
4. JFK Tour
5. Catch a Dallas Mav’s game
6. Go on the Tacos and Margaritas Tour
7. City of Lights & Art Districts Segway Tour

Eating & Drinks

1. Whistling Britches
2. Grapevine Bar
3. Fords Garage Plano
4. 11|17
5. Roots Southern Table

I love to visit Deep Ellum with all the different culture, art, and nationalities of people that gather around to have a good time. Visiting a Mav’s game is always at the top of my list. The fans, food, and atmosphere are like nothing I have ever experienced. I am a big basketball fan, so to experience the electricity in that building is amazing. Overall, I love the Dallas Fort Worth area, because there is so much to learn, great food, and overall great people.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe everything to my mom!! I can remember when I was younger all the sacrifices, she made so that I could be successful. She has always been there for me, and she is an amazing grandmother to my children. It is because of her that food is my love language and that is how I speak to the world. If I could give her a quarter of what she has given me, it still would not be enough. She has always supported my dreams and I cannot thank her enough for going along on this ride with me. Thanks, Momma for Everything!
