We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlinn Mahar-Daniels and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caitlinn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
This may sound weird, but I am an Aries…and I have known my entire life that I did not want anyone to be the boss of me. I also knew when I discovered my passion for photography as a kid, that photography must be my path in life. Fast forward to my post college life, where I was an extremely underpaid assistant to a wedding photographer, I knew if I were going to survive, I needed to make that dream of being my own boss a reality…and so I did.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Something I am most proud of in my career, is that I remember that photography isn’t JUST my career…it is my passion. I know that the moment I put down my camera and stop creating work for myself…that something has got to change. I truly believe my work I create for myself, for my passions, for my mind, is the work that transcends into my wedding photography and helps me improve. When I attended school for my undergraduate degree (BFA) in photography, I photographed portraits of people being splashed with water, this project is literally the thing that led me down the road to being obsessed with photographing people, and I have not stopped wanting to document people since.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I know this is based in Dallas, and I am based in Poughkeepsie, NY – heart of the Hudson Valley. You could say I am slightly antisocial so places I would bring someone visiting would most likely all be outdoor locations and hiking spots. I would definitely bring a visitor to the Walkway Over the Hudson (converted train bridge into a pedestrian walkway over the Hudson River), Little Stony Point also known as Sandy Beach to the locals (a sandy Hudson River beach), Minnewaska State Park (acres of endless hiking trails and waterfalls), and I would show them the cities of Beacon, NY (my hometown) and Poughkeepsie, NY.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shout out to my mom. Almost every adult I that I expressed wanting to be a professional photographer when I grew up…told me it was more a hobby, but not my mom. My mom never once doubted or discourage me from following my dreams.

Website: I am converting my website over to caitlinn.com since I am solo again in my business, hopefully by the end of the week, will keep you posted!
