We had the good fortune of connecting with Bernadette Buentello and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bernadette, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have to say I didn’t have a plan whatsoever! All I knew was 3 things that were very important to me 1. I had to make money
2. I need to be able to stay home to take care of my kids
3. I had to have fun and I had to be able to be creative
And Etsy checked all those boxes

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The whole concrete part of my designs is what I think sets me apart, it’s not the prettiest looking material unlike marble or ceramic it requires more finesse to bring out the beauty, and no it was not easy! I wanted to give up every other day and would just ask myself what are you doing? And why are you using concrete? But with every failure came a beautiful piece and being made of concrete is what made it so special! Yes you could make a bowl out of marble and ceramic but this was made from concrete! And don’t even get me started on the jewelry side. People automatically assume it’s heavy but it’s not, fragile yes but not heavy and that is where I learned my biggest lessons. Just because it’s concrete does not mean it will be strong, depending on the overall design the final piece can either withstand a drop or completely shatter when it drops. I want the world to know that this brand was built on the back of a need, my need to provide but also needed to be a stay at home mom (nothing wrong with daycare believe me been there done that and you have to do what you have to do) but that was my own personal need. It also wasn’t a fairy tale, I didn’t have this great idea and it just happened, I struggled a lot! But I never gave up and that is what makes the difference in any success story.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If she brings her kids, we need to go to traders village in Grand Prairie, klyde warren in downtown Dallas and to grandscape in the colony. Each place offers kid and family activities. But if she is coming by her self!
Well we will definitely have to hit up some local bars or comedy clubs, do some small business shopping in bishop arts or deep Ellum and finish with Sunday funday in uptown.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
And that would be my husband Kelvin, at first it was just my ideas and my work but as my businesses and ideas grew he stepped up to the plate and took the initiative to understand and learn what I do, He started helping me fulfill the online orders so I could focus on other things and that helped me really focus and grow it.
