We had the good fortune of connecting with Ana Erwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ana, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Everything that we do at Community Impact Newspaper is based around 5 key values: faith, integrity, passion, innovation and quality. We believe these values to our core. When I am faced with difficult decisions, I always take it back to these values. These have been my guiding lights over the last 7 years working in this industry and in the different roles I have held within the company.
What should our readers know about your business?
We launched our business 15 years ago this month with 4 employees in a game room. We have grown by leaps and bounds, but it has come with a lot of blood, sweat and tears (and so many laughs I should add too!) John and Jennifer Garrett started something really special that no one else has been able to replicate- a hyper-local newspaper that is unbiased, factual and that covers communities at the local level with useful information. They also created a space for local businesses to be able to advertise to their most desired audience (their own neighbors!) The way we overcome challenges is by always remembering our mission which is to build communities of informed citizens and thriving businesses through the collaboration of a passionate team. Any time we are feeling down or defeated, because it happens, we think back to why we do what we do. Over the last 7 years I have seen the direct impact of the work that we do and every time I see that it fuels me even more to keep going. Challenges will always come up, but you can and will get through the storm, just keep going and do the right thing. One of my favorite quotes is “You can never go wrong doing the right thing.”
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a great question! The area where I work and live is so much fun! Here you go – plan this trip asap! Monday – Welcome them to Grapevine and have them stay at Hotel Vin for a few nights. Eat, drink and enjoy an ambiance that is truly unmatched! Tuesday – Spend the day down Main Street and shop, eat, drink your way through town. Make sure you are ready to carry lots of bags because you will want to buy a little bit of everything! Actually, bring your loved ones’ Christmas lists and you will have a one stop shop and be done with it! You can find everything here! Wednesday – Whatever you do, go to the Gaylord Texan! Get dressed up and go to the Old Hickory Steakhouse. Also be sure to stay the night and enjoy waking up to a beautiful view! Thursday – You are starting to feel the food and wine aren’t you? Go take a walk down the trails in Grapevine and Southlake, then head on over to Southlake Town Square and do more shopping! Make sure you go to Crumbl cookie for a quick snack. You’ll have plenty of options to pick for dinner there. Friday – Go to SEA LIFE and spend several hours there! Then head on over to Colleyville and do a progressive dinner at Loveria Caffe and Next Bistro. Both of these restaurants are a must while in town! Saturday – Go to the Farmers Market in Keller and spend the morning enjoying the park! Then head on over Old Town Keller and check out the cutest shops! Sunday- Close out this wonderful vacation in Roanoke which is known as the Unique Dining Capital of Texas. Plan to be there all day and visit the many shops and restaurants they offer. It is truly unique and so much fun!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I know for a fact that if I hadn’t met my colleague, Christal Howard, who is also my boss and mentor many years ago, my life would have taken a completely different trajectory. She took a chance on me when I didn’t really know what value I was bringing. She groomed me and gave me confidence to reach for the stars. I know when people who know Christal read this, they will agree. She changes and touches the lives of everyone she meets with her unending optimism, unmatchable work ethic and belief that anything worth fighting for is possible.
