We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought Process behind starting my own business was to make more money while doing something I like to do on my own time. I first started braiding when the pandemic hit, and I wasn’t able to work. I already knew how to braid, so i posted on my instagram story ” Im doing $100 Box braids and hair included” and I got my first client. After my first client, most of my clientele would come from referrals. A lot of braiders stop braiding hair and that made it even better for me to get clientele because there always someone who wants their hair done. So, after I was braiding for about two months, I notice a new braid style which is called knotless braids was getting really popular. The first day I seen it I tried them on my mom and when I say those braids, I did on her was so ugly, I wish I could insert a picture, lol! I end up getting a human hair mannequin and watching a lots of YouTube videos on how to do knotless braids. I finally got my first client that I could do knotless braids on besides my mother, and they love their hair. All in all, my business has just been growing ever since.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Im a home-based Dallas, Tx braider. I am very professional and open to exceeding customers’ expectations. The way I got where I am professionally is from trial and error and being open to constructive criticism. One lesson I learned from being in the braid business is stay true to yourself, you cannot impression everyone. If you make a rule stand on that, don’t bend on any of your rules or boundaries you have set.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in the city is downtown I would first take them on a party bike that would show them to three nice bars. At this point we should be drunk, then we can go to a day party in Deep Ellum called Neon Kitty. After all that we should be drunk, tired and ready for the next day. I would start off the next day with brunch, I will take them to Paradiso for the scenery, photo op, & good food. Once we leave there I would take them to Top Golf for a little fun. Then go to hurricane harbor for a little cool down because extremely hot in Texas . I will save my favorite hangout spot for Sunday and we will be there all day starting at 1Pm. This spot is called Turkey Dam, this is the most entertaining location on Sunday.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my returning clients that stood beside me during the beginning when I was trying to find my way through the braid business. Also, I would love to shoutout my mother Chickitha King for letting me practice on her hair and believing in me. Nevertheless, I want to shoutout my granny Meri James for investing in my business, always sending me supplies and stuff to decorate my braid room. I want to should out all my clientele for evening booking with me!!
