We had the good fortune of connecting with Aalegra Dell Daze and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aalegra Dell, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to start pursuing drag about 3 years ago, just when the pandemic was ending. I had been cooped up during quarantine and passing time by watching RuPaul’s Drag Race. I grew up watching the show and it had always been very inspiring to me, so as an adult, I decided to give it a shot myself. I ended up falling in love — drag really allows you to do literally anything you want to do. From what kind of looks you can put together, to the types of performances that you can bring to the stage, drag is anything you want it to be. I love anime and all things nerdy, so drag is a way to make my passions tangible!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Outside of drag, I really consider myself a nerd. I love all things anime, video games, comic books, the whole nine yards. And these aren’t interests that you really associate with drag queens; but drag is the perfect outlet for me to really make my hobbies and interests tangible. I love to add an element of cosplay in my drag; I’ve created costumes and acts around some of my favorite characters in media! I also love to make people laugh more than anything, so I really lean into the camp and comedy aspect of drag. In the DFW, you tend to have a pretty good idea of what to expect at a drag show: the kicks, the splits, jumping off of tables. I like to throw a wrench in that!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to food, I recently discovered Taco y Vino near the Bishop Arts District! The outdoor scenery was beautiful, the service was amazing (shoutout to Stephanie), and the tacos and drinks were sensational! Afterwards we walked to Emporium Pies for dessert, another place I’d highly recommend! Finally, and I may be a bit biased here since I host my drag show, Halcyon Hunnies there, but Halcyon Dallas is one of the cutest coffee shops in the area! On top of the superb coffee shop experience, they also have a scratch kitchen and bar! So when it comes to cocktails, good food, and a cozy atmosphere, Halcyon’s got it all. Come see us sometime!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The group that I’d like to shout out would be the very first cast that I was apart of, the New Drag Kidz on the Block. This is a local drag show that was originally founded at the Urban Cowboy Saloon by Sapphire Davenport and Loretta Armani Mack. Not only does New Kidz market itself towards amateur/junior performers, but you receive direct mentorship from Sapphire and Loretta, who have been in the drag scene for over 10 years. Wtihout New Kidz and their mentorship, I wouldn’t be the drag queen I am today!
