We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. April Givens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. April, if you had to put a million dollars to work immediately, how would you go about investing it?
My nonprofit organization Urban Counseling Clique’s mission is to provide counseling for youth and their families. If I had $1 million dollars to invest right now I would use the money to start a motivational boot camp for kids ages 5 and up. I would acquire some land where a facility can be designed for this purpose. We will set up fun exercises and activities to teach kids coping skills, anger management techniques, and life skills. This camp will serve as a place where children will build social skills, learn assertiveness training, emotion regulation, and leadership skills. These are the things that parents wish could be taught in schools. The money would be used to make a huge impact on the world by enhancing the lives of children. The children are our future and if we can create a solid foundation for them to learn the skills necessary to help avoid so many obstacles in life that is what I feel should be done. This type of investment is one that will benefit the lives of many for many years to come.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is Urban Counseling Clique which is a mental health practice providing individual and group counseling. Urban Counseling Clique was created with all cultures in mind. I wanted a practice that people from all cultures felt comfortable coming to. We have counseled African American, Asian, Hispanic, Muslim, Chinese, LGBTQ and people from all walks of life. We learn so much from the people we interact with and that is what makes our business standout. My goal has always been to be an entrepreneur. After finishing high school with honors I joined the Army because I wanted a challenge. I learned so much about myself from being in the military and appreciated the discipline and skills I have acquired. After finishing college I worked in managed care clinics and corporate america to gain the knowledge and experience I needed to start my own business. I have always maintained a positive attitude and believed one day I would achieve my goals. I recently completed my PhD and am so excited to achieve yet another milestone. The journey was definitely not easy working, going to school, and raising two children can be tough but I persevered because I knew it would all be worth it in the end. It is because of my work ethic that my children believe they can achieve anything they set out to do. The lessons I learned along the way are to be authentic. People appreciate you more when you are truly yourself and you live life on purpose and on your own terms. I also learned to always be grateful and practice gratitude daily. I want the world to know that their are great things in store for Urban Counseling Clique and we are here to truly be an example to those who need the motivation and encouragement.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
If my best friend came to visit for a week we would visit Northpark Mall and shop, eat at places like Fish City Grill, Modern Market and Catfish Connection in south dallas. We would hangout at Venetti’s in Addison for a great live band experience and visit Vitruvian Park for a walk. We would also check out Klyde Warren Park and the food trucks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my mom Debra Givens and my grandmother Frances Givens for the love and encouragement along the way. They have always been there when I needed them and will often drop what they are doing to help me take care of my kids when I needed it or just the words of encouragement. Being a single mother has its challenges even if you are successful. Having a great support system is key to accomplishing your dreams and that is what I have had with my family. It is tough at times because they are in a different state but when they are needed they are willing to make that drive to come help and for that I am truly grateful.
