Meet Jo Moguel | Poet & Creative Entity

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jo Moguel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jo, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want to be remembered for always being myself. My legacy will be the grace in which I wear my name and my light comes from within. When I think about legacy, I imagine an imprint of me against the earth, singeing the matter with my being. You see these imprints all around the world, and when I join them it will be for being myself. For creating art that pushed my image into the world. I want to be known for my audacity to exist wholeheartedly in this world, frivolously display my personality and light to all. You should remember me for what I represent. Silenced voices from generations of fighting into contentment. I break free of a vicious cycle and present to you, me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create art to embody my heart. It’s been difficult for me to realize what my definition of an artist is, and how I see myself in the creative space. Building community has remedied these pains, and now I am building the confidence to be proud of my brand and who I am. Recently, I made the decision to drop out of college and figure out what I want to do without the influence of institutions I was pushed to join. Breaking free of that has propelled my creativity, and allowed me to see myself wholly as a intelligent, unique mixed media artist. As a published author now, I’m definitely taking strides towards who I know I will be. The release of my book has reminded me that my journey is just beginning, and it’s important to be kind to yourself as you realize who you really are.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Best things to do in Denton? First you gotta get overcharged for some delicious coffee or shaken beverage, then knock your head into the ceiling of your car for 40 miles until you find your way out, hit the highway and head to Dallas for a good time. After your feet hurt, you drive back to Denton, grab a large pizza from Crooked and binge watch Netflix with incense clogging the air and non-existent ventilation. The next morning, (if you’re lucky) there’s a Farmer’s Market and and Art Sale going on back to back in a parking lot, where there’s a lot of eyeliner and even more handmade jewelry.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my ancestors, my family, friends and loved ones. Thank you for believing in me.
