We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Kenny Lofton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Kenny Lofton, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue DJ’ing because I love music in general. I was the kid that regardless if it was a new song on the radio or an old R&B classic my mother or grandmother would have playing … I knew all the words front to back. When I was in college, I’d be the one in charge of music selection and DJ’ing, therefore it just became a way of expression! Whether I was making sure my peers were put on to new and upcoming artist or moving to the hits they already knew, DJ Kenny Lofton was in control of the crowd. As I have moved around the United States my creativity and passion has only grown; being able to DJ in multiple facets such as Internationally or even in a Corporate capacity, has expanded my love for the career, in which gives me the fuel to continue until my hands won’t allow me to spin the records no longer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, most people don’t know about my corporate life, but it’s a unique one I would say. I work for a Corporate company that is internationally recognized. This is a career that I never thought I’d be working in but I am. I work in corporate philanthropy! Starting out as a child giving back to my local community to bring in college helping with various initiatives to better the surrounding communities, to now corporately helping global causes is amazing. It’s something that is different which helps me tie my passion and career as a DJ to my corporate field. How, many may ask, well simply but putting others first, networking, serving a greater purpose in helping others or putting people in need first. Regardless rather it is with music, education, or giving back, all I feel help me fulfill my purpose in the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well first I’m taking them to any of my various gigs! But I’d take them up to Plano, to experience the Legacy Center atmosphere. It’s nice there with many food options and shopping. I would take them to downtown to experience the various rooftop, great eats, and site seeing. Deep Ellum is a must, visiting Harlowe, Bitter End, Stirr, or various other restaurants or bars. Throughout the rest of the week I may take them to Distinctive Vine Wine Lounge for an upscale black owned experience! Without a doubt I would make sure my friends got to experience Turkey D.A.M./Ten:01 in uptown. At night I personally enjoy going to have good vibes and hookah, so with the various hookah lounges in downtown or Addison would be an option. The weekends are packed so the options would be plenty, and it varies week to week, so that would depend on when they would come.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ahhh, the credit goes to few but many truly! I keep a close circle but the support is truly real. I want to shoutout GOD, first and foremost because without him nothing is truly possible. I want to shoutout my mother, grandmother, sister, father, & my son. They keep me grounded and I continue to come to them for words of wisdom and ideas. My friends: DJ Rome, DJ Tez Lately, DJ G Smoove, Sprove, Tim ForeallForeall, Drain, and few more! I appreciate them cause they stay in my corner, whether that keeping me accountable on perfecting my craft or advice. And to end it anyone that has listen to my sets, given me opportunities, or even supported me off of good strength.
