We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Glover and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matthew, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
In regards to my artwork, the biggest decision we(my wife and I) made was making the move from Phoenix, AZ to DFW. I gave up all of my connections that I had generated over the years to start completely fresh. It has made things more difficult, but I’m hoping that it will prove to be something that was needed to become successful and not remain stagnant.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There are quite a few people out there doing “sports art”. I have concentrated my work work on more portraiture in a medium that most don’t use in colored pencils. Nobody does what I do with colored pencils and The goal of each piece is not to recreate a photo, but to use the photo as the subject matter and make it into a gorgeous work of art regardless if you like sports or not. My technique has developed over a lot of years and reached a style that is uniquely mine. I taught art for 29 years and was always working my art on the side. So, being retired now has made the transition to full time artist was a little easier. The biggest challenges with my own particular subject matter is all about connections. Sports portraiture art has a very particular clientele. Because of that, the biggest hurdle that I’ve dealt with is making those big connections to the actual athletes or being able to make my artwork visible to those who might be interested in it.
I am working on increasing my visibility in DFW and hope that will eventually develop a national and worldwide interest.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since my wife and I are fairly new to DFW and Covid hit shortly after relocating here, we haven’t been able to get to know the city as much as we would like. We live in Frisco and are familiar with its area more than any other.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father was an artist on the side and I actually learned more from him than any teacher that I ever had throughout my informative years. I have always said that my interest in art was one of those “wanted to be like My Dad” stories. My wife has also been one of my biggest cheerleaders often pushing me to bigger and better things.
