We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrie Self and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terrie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
A lot of people think it’s just about working with dogs all day, but it really is more about working with people and teaching them how to relate with their dog. I really want families to enjoy their dogs more and be able to walk with them and take them places.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am the owner and trainer of Hoodlum Hounds dog training. I never thought I would own my own business or be doing what I loved, but I’ve taken the opportunities as they’ve come to get me where I am today. Most of my clients are referred to me from other clients so that tells me I’m doing something right! There’s no better feeling than a happy client. One major lesson that I’ve learned is that there is not just ONE way…I have to be open to learning new things. I’ve taken workshops from trainers around the country and although I haven’t agreed with everything everyone has taught, I have at least taken something away from each one. Every dog is different so I need to be able to know/use different techniques to get good results.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Pretty much anyone that comes to visit me gets taken to the JFK museum if they are into history. Lunch at Fuzzy’s Tacos one day is a must! We usually do a steak dinner at Saltgrass too. If they like seafood then dinner at Pappadeaux in Richardson.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband has always backed me up. When I doubted myself and if I could make my own business work, he was my biggest encourager. He celebrates with me in my accomplishments. Without him I probably would have stayed on the “safe” path of a regular 9-5 job.
