We had the good fortune of connecting with Rufus & Jenny Triplett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rufus & Jenny, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
We are from Michigan, Flint and Saginaw, respectively. Growing up in the midwest had a great impact on us. Two thriving, blue collar towns, in the 80’s, that was open for all kinds of opportunities. Where we traveled, how we thought, what we ate, what we watched on TV all played a part of growing up in that area.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We own a multimedia company, Dawah International LLC, and the fact that it focuses on projects for the voiceless and brings awareness to causes such as mass incarceration, marriage and entrepreneurship is what sets us apart. Originally starting out publishing a magazine for inmates and there families and now printing books and producing podcasts, it’s been our strategic partnerships and relationships that has gotten us to this point. Sometimes not having enough money has been a challenge. We learned how to tweak our business and pivot when necessary. We are celebrating 15 years in December.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we had to be a tour guide for people, the Deep Vellum area is a cool place to visit. Lots of nice, eclectic shops and places to eat. Also, Midtown, where you can grab a cup of coffee and a sweet treat at WhiteRhino Coffee. There’s so much halal food in Dallas and the thrift stores are adventures themselves. A must see for any Dallas Cowboys fan would be AT&T Stadium and The Dallas Stars area in Plano.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We have received so much help an inspiration over the years. As far as people, our children have been a great inspiration because we knew they would follow our example. They are both entrepreneurs as well. Our Facebook friends and family have been a constant place of support and encouragement. Daymond John, CEO of FUBU, surrounded us with love, support and mentorship as well.
