Meet Ellie Shorb | Realtor with Compass in DC

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellie Shorb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ellie, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
The best job I’ve had is being a parent. My husband John and I are both entrepreneurs and always kept top of mind our desire to spend more time with them (not less), and quality time at that. When our kids were toddlers, I worked from home.
When the kids were born, John had just started his landscape business, yet still, he made sure to be home by 5pm so we could each pick up a kiddo and dance around the living room til dinnertime, bath time, story time and bedtime. Once I became a full time Realtor, I found that sometimes when I’d pick up my daughter from school, I’d still be on a work call. During those calls, I was not fully “present” with her. My friend Sharran Shrivatsaa, taught me to finish calls in the garage before coming into the house and we started to turn off our cell phones possible for family time. It was great advice.
My kids Jack and Catherine are now 26 and 25, respectively, and because of the focus on work-life balance, one of the things we’ve done as a family that brought us close together is international travel. We made a dream list (thanks, Tony Robbins!) and ticked off a trip per year, prioritizing time together. So far, we’ve traveled together to Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Egypt, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bali, Belize, St. Lucia, and numerous states in the US. These trips have been a true gift each time we’ve gone away together.
My son, Jack, now works with me as a Realtor on The Shorb Team here in the DC metro area and daughter Catherine is in Brooklyn now, pursuing a career in neuro-psychology.
I am so fortunate. I take nothing for granted. I’m thankful to my coaches: Tom Ferry, Sharran Shirvatsaa and Carolyn Augur for helping me to focus on the most important things and put those key things into my calendar first. Starting the day with gratitudes, coffee, exercise (at Equinox) and 10 minutes with the Calm app start the day right. Note, I don’t start the day with emails or social media.
One last helpful tip is that for eight years, I’ve been a part of a mastermind group with four other like-minded women. We meet monthly to set goals and to hold each other accountable. In the last eight years, I have only missed one mastermind call- when I was in Thailand with my family.
Ellie Lunde Shorb was born in Dallas, TX in 1967
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m so happy to be a real estate agent with Compass. It’s the most collaborative brokerage I know of and the tone is set by our CEO, the fabulous Robert Reffkin.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a tourist now when I come. When I lived there: 6 Flags was at the top of my list!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
HUSBAND JOHN – COACH TOM FERRY – ROBERT REFFKIN – Mastermind sisters; Mitra Lore, Sara Watkins, Eileen Mitchard, & Moira Schoen
