We had the good fortune of connecting with Dulce Jasmine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dulce, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is something my dad has said to me since I was a child. Whenever I was having a difficult time deciding what to do or when he could tell I had something heavy on my brain he’d always sit me down and say, “It’s your little red wagon. You can choose to push it or pull it. Or you can let it stand.” It makes me feel comforted because it’s basically a reminder that I can make my own decisions. It takes the power away from the situation and gives it back to me. It’s easy to get lost in your worries and thoughts but that little quote empowers me. That was an important lesson he taught me about giving situations careful thought and learning that I can either work at it or leave it alone and be ok with whatever I decide to do. I carry it with me today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a photographer/videographer. I have been interested in photography my entire life and have always had a deep interest in the world around me. I find beauty in lots of things and photography just makes sense. We are story tellers and we can create a new world with our images. It’s an amazing feeling. I bought my first camera about 2 years ago and my passion was quickly fueled. I’ve been working really hard to get into fashion, product, and music photography. Recently I had the honor of shooting my first music video for singer/songwriter, Westonn. The video is currently at nearly 68,000 views on YouTube. I am so incredibly proud of that video because we worked hard for it! To know that it’s been seen than many times is something I never could’ve imagined. I was terrified of letting him down and also told him I couldn’t do it, but I felt so honored that this amazingly talented artist believed in me enough to give me this opportunity. It feels good to be seen by a fellow creative. I don’t take it for granted one bit. This has not been easy. The biggest hurdle I’ve had to overcome is my opinion about myself and my capabilities. Like the amazing Erykah Badu said, “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my sh*t.” I would worry myself sick about what someone might say about a picture I posted or if anyone would even like it. I had to stop all of that. Thankfully, I was able to find two really great mentors that have taught me to just shoot and how to build a strong business foundation. Brandon Lester from The LX Studios and Matt Hargrove from Matt Hargrove Photography, have truly been an amazing help in me overcoming my challenges. At the core of it all, I needed to believe in myself harder. And that’s what I want the world to know about me, my brand, and my story. Believe in yourself and believe in your vision. You have it for a reason.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I’m hanging out with my bestie for an entire week we’re getting active and enjoying nature. Cedar Ridge Preserve for morning hikes are a must. We also love to eat so I’m taking her to Bread Winners Café or Sixty Vines. Then we’re definitely going to check out the amazing museums in Dallas. I love The Samuari Collection in Dallas. I went a few years ago and it was so cool. Klyde Warren Park and Vitruvian Park are my favorite parks in the city. A cute picnic or just catching up about life is perfect for those locations. Dallas is such a vibrant place. I love it here!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people in my life that deserve a lot of credit for where I am today. My family and friends have been so incredibly supportive and it has been nothing short of a blessing. One of my closest friends, Kelsey, deserves a lot of recognition because she inspired me to truly go for what I wanted. She has been there since the beginning of it and I’m truly thankful for her inspiration and guidance.
