We had the good fortune of connecting with Parker Cates and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Parker, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My mental process for founding the first business was not miraculous. I found a huge gap in pricing models in the market and decided to open a company with moderate pricing. The second, third, and fourth businesses kind of fell into place on their own. That’s usually how things work.

What should our readers know about your business?
Well, I started our first company, Real Deal, in 2015. We rented a property, filled it with furniture, and started marketing. Our business model was simple: help struggling addicts and alcoholics integrate into society successfully (At an affordable price). After a time we started another company to buy the properties. Then we opened a few more businesses. Essentially all the lessons I have learned are from failure. Never overextend yourself financially, do not trust word over signatures, and always focus on the unique perspective for consumers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to eat BBQ. Without a doubt.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom and grandma. My momma raised me alone, worked two jobs, went to school, and dealt with a hellion child. My grandma, of course, played a vital role in my upbringing as well. Without their fierce loyalty, persistence, and unwavering love, I would not have understood fighting through adversity, believing in myself, and refusing to quit when things become difficult. For the businesses, all the credit goes to our phenomenal employees. Without them, we would be nothing. Our people have continued to fight for the cause, and have consistently proven what it means to be leaders in an ever-changing market.
