We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristi Smithson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristi, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
In life, my path has led me on multiple creative journeys. I have always had a passion for the arts. But, it began with studying Interior Design in college which ultimately led me to earn a Master of Architecture.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I want the world to know that art is personal. If you are buying original Fine art for your space, then you obviously should have a connection with the art and the artist. If you are considering commissioning me to paint a custom art piece for you, believe me when I say that I will work to create something you will love now and forever. What I love the most about my clients is that they trust in me to create something that works with the colors and design of their space. I am fortunate that most of my clients own multiple pieces of my art and we have a continued conversation and friendship beyond just art.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well since I am from Dallas and grew up here, I always enjoy visiting the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher, and The Crow Museum. Even though I am a native Texan who has lived here all of my life, there is something I have wanted to do, but haven’t done yet. I would love to go on an adventure through Dallas seeing all of the commissioned public art. I know there are so many beautiful art pieces that I have yet to lay my eyes on, and look forward to marking this off my bucket list.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who have encouraged me and stood by me through this journey! I am always so grateful for their support. First and foremost, my loving husband, Brandon Smithson, has been there to help me with so many art installations. Thankfully he is always assisting to load and unload the car for art events. He even supported my dream in the biggest way possible by believing in my crazy idea of moving our family to a house we built together with my own dedicated studio and gallery/showroom. Then, I would say my amazing group of friends. They are great listeners and I know I can count on them when I need anything. I have called upon my friend Marianne Lewis, who is also my creative partner in our designer handbag collaboration, so many times that I have lost count. I owe her big time. I am grateful for my lifelong friend Crystal Valletta, whom I have known since elementary school, she is always there when I need her. Overall, I am surrounded by a wonderful community of friends, neighbors, and supportive clients who make me a better person.
