Meet Rowan Meyer | Self-Storage Owner & Operator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rowan Meyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rowan, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of our business has been the determination to keep pursuing our long-term goals, even when challenges arise. Building a business takes perseverance, patience, and the willingness to keep moving forward through difficult seasons. Along the way, we’ve had to overcome self-doubt, setbacks, and plenty of “no’s,” but we’ve learned that success often comes from continuing to look for solutions instead of giving up. One way we do this now is by surrounding ourselves with the right team — people who share our vision, bring different strengths to the table, and continue to push the business forward. That combination of perseverance and strong support from the people around us is what truly drives our success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our journey into self-storage started with a desire to build something meaningful for our growing family — something long-term that we could build on and serve others through. For a long time, we talked about different business ideas and paths we could pursue, but we kept coming back to self-storage because of its simplicity, stability, and the opportunity to genuinely help people during different seasons of life.
From the beginning, we’ve tried to focus on more than just owning property. We care deeply about creating clean, secure, and well-operated facilities while making the customer experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. Whether someone is moving, growing a business, downsizing, or simply needing extra space, we want them to feel taken care of from the moment they interact with us. We believe being willing to learn, adapt, and serve people well is what truly sets us apart.
Like for most business owners, the journey hasn’t been easy. We’ve faced financing roadblocks, maintenance issues, operational challenges, and plenty of moments where we had to learn and make decisions on the fly. There are always new problems to solve in business, and self-storage is no different. What helped us overcome those challenges was a strong support system through our family and mentorship group, along with staying focused on our long-term vision during difficult seasons.
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that growth rarely happens overnight. You have to stay patient, continue learning, and be willing to adapt when things don’t go according to plan. We’ve definitely learned to expect the unexpected along the way, and everything takes longer than you think it will.
What we’re most proud of is what this business has allowed us to build. We’ve loved getting to this stage and connecting with so many different people, whether they are renters or other operators in the industry. We want people to know that behind our brand is a genuine commitment to serving, improving, and building something with integrity that lasts for the long term.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to Dallas for a week, I’d mix in all my favorite local spots with a few things that really show off the area. We’d probably kick things off with Hutchins BBQ in McKinney because nothing says “Welcome to Texas” like perfectly cooked brisket and the banana pudding that ruins all other banana puddings forever. After that, we’d wander around The Star or Legacy West just to walk off the food and catch up.
At some point in the week, we’d hit an FC Dallas soccer game. The atmosphere at Toyota Stadium is fun without being overwhelming, and it’s an easy way to show someone what North Texas sports culture feels like. Another day would be reserved for Andretti’s in The Colony—go-karts, arcade games, VR… it’s basically an excuse for two grown adults to act like kids again.
We’d also squeeze in a round of golf somewhere—there are tons of solid courses around Plano. After golf, I’d take them to Delucca’s in Plano for Brazilian-style pizza. It’s one of those places people don’t expect, and then they walk out talking about it for the rest of the trip.
I would definitely plan a more relaxed day too where I’d have them over, throw a few steaks on the grill, put on some music, and just enjoy the downtime. That’s usually when the best conversations happen anyway. Since I love doing something a little different, we would also spend an afternoon at Activate. It’s like stepping into a real-life video game—team challenges, puzzles, physical games. It’s surprisingly addictive and always ends with a lot of laughing.
We’d wrap up the week with something simple—maybe exploring Dallas proper, visiting the Perot Museum, or grabbing a drink somewhere with a good view. Nothing too structured, just a good mix of food, fun, and time to actually enjoy being together.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my family. Buying and operating self-storage facilities takes a lot of grit and perseverance, and they have stood by my side from the very beginning. With my family’s guidance, encouragement, and willingness to help however they could, I had the confidence to keep moving forward, especially during those moments where we just had to figure it out as we went.
Also, I believe it’s vital to never stop learning and growing. I had my eyes opened after reading books like “The Richest Man in Babylon” and “Rich Dad Poor Dad”, and I still enjoy learning about ways I can continue improving in life and business.
Big shoutout to our team at StorageLife, as well. Being surrounded by experienced operators and people willing to share knowledge, advice, and encouragement has been incredibly valuable as we’ve worked to improve our facilities, streamline operations, and continue elevating the business. Entrepreneurship can feel isolating at times, so having a community of people who genuinely want to see each other succeed has played a huge role in our journey.
