Meet Lisa Kelley | Owner of First Impression Learning Center

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Kelley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business really came from seeing a need in my community. I wanted to create a safe, nurturing place where children from all backgrounds feel included, valued, and genuinely loved. I also believed strongly that high-quality education shouldn’t be a luxury, so providing excellent care and learning opportunities at affordable rates was very important to me. Beyond that, I wanted to support working families by helping them avoid having to choose between their careers and being confident their children are in a caring, dependable environment. Ultimately, starting my business was about making a meaningful difference in the community and being part of something that truly supports children and families every day.

What should our readers know about your business?
When I started this business, my vision was to create a place that truly reflects the community we serve. As a minority business owner in Plano, Texas, representation has always been extremely important to me. One of my ongoing challenges—and commitments—has been ensuring that children and families can see themselves reflected in our staff, leadership, and classrooms. We are proud of the diversity within both our staff and our students, and we intentionally foster an inclusive environment where differences are celebrated and every child feels valued.
What makes us uniquely different is our intentional approach to both education and nutrition. We believe nutrition and learning go hand in hand, so instead of a one-size-fits-all meal plan, parents provide food they know their children will eat. This respects cultural preferences, supports healthy eating habits, and reduces food waste. In addition, once a month each family contributes a snack for the class to share, which helps build community and teaches children about sharing and inclusion.
Academically, our curriculum is STEM-based and designed to prepare children not just for kindergarten, but for life. We focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and curiosity. Ultimately, my goal has always been to provide high-quality care and education at affordable prices, so families never have to choose between excellence, accessibility, or representation.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to Plano for a week, I’d want them to experience both the energy of North Texas and the heart of our community—great food, culture, and places that feel welcoming and fun.
We’d start in Downtown Plano Arts District, grabbing brunch at Fillmore Pub or Vickery Park. After walking the historic shops and murals, we’d check out local events or live music in the evening and have dinner at Urban Crust—especially the rooftop for the view. We’d stop by Legacy Food Hall so they could sample everything from tacos to Asian fusion. For dinner, I’d take them to Sixty Vines or Mexican Sugar at Legacy West—great food and atmosphere.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
With absolute certainty, I truly believe I would not be where I am today without my faith. It has guided my decisions, grounded me during challenges, and given me the strength and perseverance to keep moving forward when things were difficult. In addition,
I would dedicate my shoutout to my family, who have been the foundation behind everything I’ve been able to accomplish. My husband has been my constant support and encouragement, always believing in the vision even during the challenging moments. My sister has been a steady source of strength, guidance, and motivation. Most of all, I want to recognize my two Co- Directors, Mrs. Ashley and Mrs. H., whose dedication and commitment have been absolutely critical to the success of the center. Their leadership, consistency, and behind-the-scenes support have helped keep the business running smoothly and made it possible for us to remain open and thriving for the past 10 years.
I also want to extend my deepest gratitude to the families who have trusted my staff with their children. That trust means everything to us and is at the heart of why we do what we do. Without the support of each and every person who has believed in this vision—my family, my team, and our families—I would not be in business today.
