Meet Heidi Washington | HLW Photo

We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heidi, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I used to be very bad a finding a good balance between the two. I would spend countless hours on my work and then have no energy left for everything else in my life. After having kids, I’ve come to realize that having a good work life balance is extremely important not only because of our busy schedules with all of my kids extracurricular activities, but also because its important for me to be present as a mom and wife.
I’m still learning to find that good middle ground, but what has helped me is setting boundaries. For example making sure that I leave work at work (my office) and then making sure I’m 100% present with my family when it’s time for them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is my passion to document intimate and special milestones for families that I care about so much. This is something I cherish and I hope to continue growing to be able to reach and connect with more families around me.
Getting to where I am at today has been an adventure for sure. I found my passion for photography in high school and was able to continue pursuing it in college. After college I took some time away from creating art and started my journey as an educator, but I always had that feeling that creating work was something I wanted to come back to. After 6 years as an educator, I made the decision to leave my position as a high school teacher and go full time with my photography business. This is where my passion is and I am excited to be able to express myself creatively again and also be able to connect with families!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them to visit Denton! I went to college there and loved every bit of my time visiting different parts of the city. I’d take them to Hoochie’s for seafood or LSA for a yummy burger! After, we’d take a walk around the Denton Downtown Square and visit the shops and Beth Maries for some ice cream! Then we’d end the night with a hang out at a local bar like Eastside or Harvest House for some live music! There’s so much to do and see in Denton and I think it’d be a perfect place for someone to visit!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this to my parents and their family business, Maripoza Art.
My parents are the most hardworking people I know. Their journey has been long and challenging at times, but the way they continue to push forward is truly inspiring. I hope to one day achieve the same level of success and perseverance that they have shown.
