We had the good fortune of connecting with Antonio Palomarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Antonio, what do you attribute your success to?
As a former Marine, the most valuable asset behind my success has been my mindset and dedication. My four years of service taught me the value of consistency, dedication and integrity. These qualities have not only guided my approach on how to be prominent in a saturated industry, but have also been instrumental in driving my growth.

The Marine Crops wasn’t just part of my identity, it’s where my barbering career started. I began cutting hair in the barracks while stationed in Oahu, Hawai’i, and from there, I continued to master and refine my craft.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
1) I’m most proud of my recent accomplishment in placing second in the “Best High Fade” category at this year’s Fade Wars. In my ongoing journey to set myself apart, I’ve launched a unique series of interviews with local business owners—cutting their hair while asking them questions at their own locations. My latest interview took place at Metroflex Mansfield, where I had the opportunity to cut and chat with owners JD and David right on their gym floor. I look forward to showcasing my talents in an upcoming Oklahoma City competition and connecting with other barbers.

2) From cutting hair at the barracks to professionally cutting at a shop, I had to jump a few hoops, the biggest being mastering barbering school and passing my licensure exams. It was challenging to gain my professional licensure because I had to learn not just haircuts but also sanitation, infection prevention, anatomy, etc. Through hard work and dedication, I became a licensed barber within a year.

3) I’ve learned many lessons along the way, but here are my top three lessons. First, you’re clients are human. Barbers work around a tight schedule based on appointments, so when clients show up late, it can tremendously disrupt our day.
It’s important to remember that our clients have their own lives, and sometimes, we just need to show them grace. Second, each hair type requires a different technique. With a diverse client portfolio, I’ve had to master different techniques to cater to a range of hair types. Lastly, barbers play a crucial role in building clients’ confidence. That means focusing on quality over quantity. Letting a client leave unhappy just to squeeze in a walk-in can damage your reputation more than you might think. Take your time and make sure every client leaves your chair satisfied.

4) Dallas-Fort Worth is filled with barbershops ranging from high-end to budget-friendly, but what sets me apart is the mindset I honed as a Marine, one built on discipline, attention to detail, and an commitment to my craft. This drive translates into every cut and client experience, ensuring quality and precision in everything I do. Whether its a new or returning client, my goal is the same, to provide a unique and memorable service.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As an Arlington native, I’d have to take them to a Dallas sports games. Whether it be a Dallas Cowboys, Texas Ranger, Dallas Stars, etc. game, they have to experience our city pride. For some delicious bites, I’d take them to my favorite steak house, Texas Roadhouse, or support a local favorite, Maria Bonita, for some chilaquiles. Sweet tooth? I’d definitely head to Dirty Dough or Roadrun’r Exotic Cereal Bar in Arlington, or any nearby Marble Slab. Looking for a gym? I’d recommend visiting Metroflex Mansfield! Looking to play pickleball, hit up Friendship Park, Chic-N-Pickle, or The Epic in Grand Prairie. Looking for a unique spot for drinks and a nice dinner? RH Rooftop in Dallas is the way to go!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My fiancée, Bessy Segovia, has been my unwavering support throughout this entire journey. I’m also deeply grateful to my parents, Omar Palomarez and Kristine McCarty, for their constant encouragement and belief in my hustle. Lastly, a big shoutout to TopNotch Barbershop in Grand Prairie, TX for welcoming me into their family and fueling my growth.
