Meet Mikayla Hicks | Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikayla Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikayla, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised here in Dallas, TX. Duncanville to be specific. I was raised by a single mother with 2 children who always made sure we never needed for anything. She has always set an amazing example for my sister and I, to be God-fearing women and to make sure we are always able to take care of ourselves no matter what. She is someone who strongly shaped me into the person that I am today. This is how I am able to do a lot of the things that I do, she showed me that I could go after anything that I set my mind to-which is exactly what I did!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have chosen to express my creativity to the world through content creation. As a matter of fact, this life chose me, not the other way around. I never had the intention to actually pursue content creation. I have always loved to watch others live their lives through the internet. Mainly YouTube. Some of my favorite creators are Talitha Jane, Glamazontay, Only One Jess, Jaelah Majette and so many more. I have watched them grow throughout the years and find them to be such an inspiration. How they live their lives, freely and unapologetically. But I never really saw myself in their shoes. In front of the camera. I randomly started getting an overwhelming amount of signs to just start posting. I prayed on it and sat on the idea for a while before I acted on it. After I felt I got the green light from God, I began recording and posting.
If I had to, I would label myself as an introvert. I would rather stay at home and watch Netflix in my PJ’s than go out and be social in public. Speaking to strangers makes my heart skip a couple of beats. This is one of the first hurdles I had to cross. How can you be on social media without being social? I was not really on social media until the beginning of 2024. That is when I made my personal Instagram account- @butyoucancallmekaylaa. At the end of 2023, I made a list of resolutions that I wanted to complete in the coming year. One of those goals was to be more social, specifically make at least one new friend. This is when I started to come out of my shell more. One day I was scrolling on IG and saw a book club in my area that was having their first meet up the following day. I love love love reading and that was also on my list of resolutions. So I said why not and RSVP’d. That last minute decision was one of the best decisions I could have made at the time. I met some amazing individuals, and have read some books I would have never thought twice about. All of that to say, this was a core memory for me in my journey of becoming more social. Shoutout to Booked & Busy Book Club!
Something that I feel like sets me apart is my faith. I love God. A lot! That can kind of be hard to express in the society we live in today. Especially in this field. I have recently been learning to incorporate God into my content. Because I would not be where I am today- who I am today- without Him. I want God in every decision I make, big or small. And He has been with me every step of the way. One of the biggest and clearest signs He presented me with was meeting Keith Lee at the beginning of this year. That was not a coincidence. I do have my experience meeting him posted on my socials so check it out if you would like to hear more about it!
I have also recently quit my job to pursue content full time. This is the hardest thing I have had to deal with so far in my journey. Quitting my job has brought me so much uncertainty. It is kind of like groping around in the dark, not knowing your next steps. But again, the only thing that is keeping me strong, is my faith. What I do know for certain, is that with God by my side, anything is possible. It also helps that I am surrounded by so many people that support me and my dream. My plan is to keep putting 110% into everything that I do, because what I am striving for, is what I already have.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I was showing a friend around Dallas, there are so many spots I would love to take them. I love my city down!
To eat, first stop hands down, straight from the airport, would be to Henderson’s Chicken. You can only get their food in the Triple D and it is always fresh and perfectly seasoned! Some other places they would have to check out for food and drinks are Haywire, Perry’s, True Kitchen and Kocktails, Sapa House and XOXO.
For chill places to hang, I’d recommend White Rhino, Wild Detectives, Berni Bean, Funny Library and The Meteor. There are also so many great nature spots/parks in Dallas. I love the trail under the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, the Katy Trail, Kylde Warren park and Prayer Mountain. For nightlife, Oak Lawn is always the move and I love Izkina, Double D’s and LadyLove as well!
For activities, they would have to visit Upstairs Circus and the Dallas Comedy Club in Deep Ellum, the Puttery at Grandscape, a Sofar Sounds Concert, and a 4D movie at B&B Theaters.
There is so much here to do, they would need to come back and visit!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to my mom, Cherita Stokes. She has been a stellar role model for me and I wouldn’t be who I am today without her.
