We had the good fortune of connecting with Michaela Swanson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michaela, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
People think this industry is just glam and self-care, but what they don’t see is the wear and tear behind the scenes—especially when you’re doing more than just hair. I offer facials, scalp treatments, and massages —bending, reaching, using deep pressure with my hands and arms, all day long.
I’ve had days where my wrists were so tight and hands were so tired and cramped that I could barely hold a brush, or my feet were screaming after 12 hours of clients. Emotionally, we carry a lot too—clients open up, and we’re often their safe space. Im just as much of a therapist and life coach as I am a cosmetologist.
I pour a lot of myself into what I do because I care deeply, but it takes a toll that most people outside the industry don’t even realize.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from others is the genuine passion I have for what I do and the care I pour into every service I provide. It’s not just about giving someone a great haircut, facial, or massage—it’s about creating an experience that makes them feel valued, and rejuvenated. I truly care about each client’s individual needs and work hard to make them feel their absolute best, both inside and out. I take the time to understand their desires and concerns, to tailoring every service to their unique preferences. This personal approach, combined with my love for the craft, ensures that every client leaves not just looking better, but feeling better too. I’m not just providing a service; I’m creating an experience that nurtures them in a way that’s hopefully meaningful and memorable.

I recently made the bold decision to leave my previous job with hourly pay and benefits to open my own private suite. It was a leap of faith, but I knew it was the right time to take control of my career and create something that reflects my passion for providing more personalized services. Transitioning to my private suite in Deep Ellum has allowed me to connect with my clients on a deeper level, tailoring every experience to their unique needs.
I’m really looking forward to the growth of my business and how I can continue to refine my craft and expand my services. There’s so much potential ahead, and I’m eager to see how I can evolve as both a business owner and a service provider.

I’m excited to have a space where my clients feel not only pampered but truly cared for, and I’m hopeful that this next chapter will allow me to thrive in ways I’ve only dreamed of.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since moving to Dallas, I will say, I have become more of a homebody, focusing a lot on work, home, and adjusting to the fast-paced city life. I’ve really missed having the nature I was used to in Colorado and back home in South Florida. It’s so easy to get caught up in the daily grind, but if my best friend were visiting, I’d definitely make it a priority to get out and explore the city together, rediscovering what Dallas has to offer.

We’d start the day with a stroll around White Rock Lake. It offers a beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle, with miles of trails, scenic views, and plenty of peaceful spots to sit and reflect. I think it would be a perfect way to start the day and enjoy the outdoors.

We’d take time to explore Deep Ellum to check out the street art, grab a coffee, and wander around the quirky shops.

For lunch, I’d take my friend to Pecan Lodge or Terry Blacks to try some of the best BBQ in Dallas.
After, we could head to Klyde Warren Park to relax and people-watch. There are food trucks parked there, so we could grab something light, maybe tacos or a cold drink while we hang out.

For a truly local experience, I’d take them to the Bishop Arts District—it’s such a charming area with independent shops, restaurants, and art galleries that give you a taste of Dallas’ unique vibe.

In the afternoon, a visit to Meow Wolf in Grapevine. Ive been to the one in Denver and had a blast! It’s an art museum where you can wander through different worlds full of interactive art. It’s the perfect spot to tap into creativity, have fun, and get lost in the experience!

For dinner, we could indulge at Texas de Brazil or go somewhere a little more low-key like Las Palmas.
The food scene here is fantastic, with everything from tacos to fine dining.

We could catch a concert at any one of the many venues here or go dancing at Red River afterwards to finish the night off.

I think this combination of nature, good food, art and night life would be the perfect way to show my best friend a fun and balanced side of Dallas that I’ve been missing out on. It would be such a great way to reconnect with the city and enjoy nature, good company, and great food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to take a moment to give a heartfelt shoutout to everyone I’ve ever crossed paths with—no matter how brief or lasting the connection.
Each person I’ve encountered has helped shape me into who I am today. Whether through the good times, tough lessons, or the moments of growth, every interaction has been part of my journey. I truly believe that every person I’ve met was meant to teach me something—whether it’s about love, resilience, or the strength within myself. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who’s helped me grow and evolve, and for every experience that’s led me to where I am now.
