We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Lillian Medhus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Lillian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Aspire Women’s Wellness is a holistic women’s health clinic, focused on the treatment of sexual dysfunction, chronic pelvic pain, and hormonal concerns, including menopause and PCOS. I have been a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner for over 7 years, and started Aspire out of the desire to provide the kind of care I would want my family and friends to have access to. I have a personal history of endometriosis, cancer, and chronic illness, and I know the struggle of managing multiple specialists, numerous appointments, and having to open up about vulnerable conditions on a repeated basis. I provide a space for clients to feel comfortable, share their story, and be heard and believed. Together we design a holistic treatment plan for their health concerns and I can coordinate with the other members of their healthcare team.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Aspire Women’s Wellness is a holistic, specialty practice. Our values are providing holistic, trauma informed, patient-centered, evidence based, and inclusive care that improves patients’ health and quality of life. I spend 60-90 minutes with every patient, hearing their story and trying to understand their concerns. That time allows me to begin to get to know them on a personal level, so that together we can build a treatment plan that works for their life. I focus on all areas of health- sleep, stress, diet, movement, & relationships. By utilizing the best of conventional medicine (medications, imaging, labs, etc) and the most evidence based lifestyle recommendations, I help clients take charge of their own healthcare.

Many of my patients are seeking treatment for sexual dysfunction (pain, low desire, difficulty with orgasm), chronic pelvic pain, or hormone concerns. Often times, these concerns are brushed off or disregarded in the traditional medical model. Patients may come to me frustrated with a lack of attention and positive outcomes, and I am able to hear their concerns and put them on the path to a healthier and happier future.

I am still in the start-up phase of the business. It was very difficult to have the courage to jump into entrepreneurship, after having been an employee my whole career. Two friends and business mentors of mine, Becky Allen (Genesis PT & Wellness) and Christy Anderson (Hope Fit & Nutrition), both encouraged me that my skills could serve women in DFW. With their push and the support of my family & business partner, I jumped in! I truly believe that women in TX deserve this type of care, and I want to fill a gap in the healthcare system here.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots in DFW!
-Dallas Arboretum, especially in the Spring!
-Bishop Arts District for the shopping and vibes
-Trade Oak Cliff- love their pottery classes
-Waxahachie Downtown square, lots of boutiques and restaurants
-Saviana Winery, especially during bluebonnet season
-I love going to the Wings WNBA games!
-World Springs for a relaxing day
-Verbena Parlor for coffee and manicures

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been influenced and inspired by so many people on my journey in healthcare. First, I am so thankful to my parents who saw my love and aptitude for science early on, and encouraged me to pursue a career in healthcare. My husband has been my supporter through everything, and pushed me to open Aspire. I am beyond thankful to all of my instructors in graduate school who showed me what holistic, compassionate, evidenced based care is. I owe a debt of gratitude to my former colleague and professional mentor, Dr. Mark Griffo, who encouraged me to pursue the sex medicine and pelvic pain specialty. And finally, the biggest thanks goes to all my current and previous patients. Your vulnerability, your stories, and your strength in the face of many challenges, continues to inspire me and push me to be a better provider and human every day.
