We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Roh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
This goes back to almost 8 years ago when I was working full-time as a tax accountant in Sydney. Although I didn’t mind the corporate environment, I was always desperate for an outlet to keep my creativity flowing and wanted to find something I could enjoy doing for the longer term.
I started off by taking one day floristry classes and I fell in love with it instantly. Then I took courage to take the professional course and was occasionally asked to make flower bouquets for my friends and provide flowers for small weddings. That’s when I started thinking about turning this into a proper business and it all expanded from there.
I had to take some breaks in between due to a couple of relocations across the globe, marriage and birth of my little one, but I am glad that I have kept pushing and took the leap of faith to start again in Dallas.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Sure! Misofloret is an online floral studio based in Dallas and we specialize in custom-made floral arrangements, intimate and small weddings/events.
I am always inspired by nature and I love observing the constantly changing colors of the sky, trees and flowers – it is truly God’s artwork! I believe that flowers are beautiful just the way they are in nature and love how they naturally complement one another, which is what I try to embody in my designs. I think some keywords that could describe my style would be whimsical, modern and romantic. I feel extremely blessed that I get to take part in the most special and meaningful moments of my clients that will be cherished for a lifetime.
It definitely was not easy to get to where I am today and I had to overcome multiple challenges along the way. I have moved countries several times due to personal reasons and each time, I had to start again from scratch to work on finding local suppliers and building a good reputation in my area. Becoming a mom was another huge mindset shift that I am still working on. At one point, I had to accept the fact that I can’t and shouldn’t be pushing myself 100% in all parts of my life. To maintain a healthy work life balance, I started setting aside time and boundaries for myself at work and at home as a mom. Work wise, this meant that I had to take things at a slower pace and create a manageable workload. As a mom, this meant when I set aside time for my little one, I silence my phone and be 100% present with him.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Unfortunately, I’m not the best person to answer this one since I have only moved to Dallas 3 months ago and I haven’t been to many places yet! Having said that, I’m big on coffee and desserts so some of the places I’ve tried and liked so far are:
– GEORGE COFFEE + PROVISIONS: really nice atmosphere with farmhouse style interior of white and wood! Coffee is on point, and they have plenty of indoor and outdoor seatings. I would easily spend a few hours here to work on my laptop. I can’t wait to go back when the weather cools down to sit outside and enjoy the sun with a cup of coffee.
– Everything Madeleine: specializes in madeleines and they taste AMAZING! They have unique flavors such as horchata, injeolmi, capuccino and matcha macademia. They occasionally offer crookies and canelé as well. If you purchase more than 5, it comes in a fancy box so it makes a perfect gift too!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I honestly wouldn’t have made it this far without the help and encouragement from my family and friends. When I first started Misofloret in Sydney, a friend of mine who works as a graphic designer was kind enough to design my business logo, another friend who works as a wedding planner referred her brides to me, and my photographer friend offered a ‘behind the scenes’ photoshoot to capture moments of myself working which all helped enormously to build my brand. I can’t thank enough all the support and guidance I have received throughout!
Last but not least, I’d like to give a HUGE shoutout to my husband for being my absolute rock over the past years. Because of him, I was able to move to the States and start Misofloret again in Dallas which opened up so many new opportunities to meet interesting people and gain new perspectives in life. I want to thank him for always believing in me, praying for me and motivating me to pursue my dreams.
