We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika Benjamin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erika, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
I’ve had to work hard to parent in a healthy and emotionally responsible way, while also recognizing the unique individuality of each of my children. There is no one-size-fits-all approach that works, because they each have distinct personalities, thoughts, experiences and feelings. I have had to apologize to my oldest child for not fully understanding how to parent her and I have learned and improved through the experience with my second child.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I began making my own granola as a personal snack while working as a fitness instructor. When I shared samples with the women in my class, they were immediately captivated by it, sparking the inception of my business. What fills me with the greatest pride is crafting a product with my own hands, infused with love, that brings immense joy and satisfaction to people’s lives.

Despite the challenges and setbacks along the way, including the tragic loss of my Dad in a 2022 car accident, caused by someone driving under the influence, I have remained resolute in my determination. While my business may not be where I envisioned it yet, I refuse to give up. I hold steadfast to my belief that Southern Girl Granola is destined for its highest potential. Though it has been a difficult journey, I am unwavering in my dedication to realizing my dreams and honoring my Father.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have friends who prioritize a healthy lifestyle, so my first instinct would be to start the day by taking them hiking at Cedar Hill Nature Preserve or HIIT class at my favorite gym. Team Bailey Fitness. After working up an appetite, we would head to either the Dallas Farmers Market or Bishop Arts District for a delicious meal. Being passionate about African culture, I would then suggest a visit to Pan African Connection, a renowned staple in Dallas where we could enjoy the culture and shop for Authentic African artwork, clothing, jewelry, books and more.

As for nightlife, I might not be an expert on the scene, but I’ve always enjoyed Sandaga. It has an inviting energy and positive vibes, it the perfect spot to end the day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am fortunate to have exceptional sisters who are not only supportive, encouraging, and inspiring, but who also empower me to become the best version of myself. They serve as my guiding lights, consistently reminding me of important matters, keeping me focused on my goals, and offering invaluable insights to nurture the growth of my business. Moreover, their guidance extends to my daughters, helping them stay on course and remain motivated. Their outstanding contributions enrich my life in countless ways.
