We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Over the years, there are certain habits I have formed along the way that have helped me achieve certain levels of success in my career. However, as I take a look at the long term, these are the top five habits I believe have helped me overall.

Starting at Habit #5, STAYING CURIOUS: In this career path, being a journalist, a news anchor, a reporter, a person in media… You HAVE to stay curious. Whether I am watching different news shows, reading articles from various news sources or even striking conversations with new people…. I push myself to expand my news input and find new perspectives.

Habit #4, REMEMBERING MY ROOTS: My parents came from very humble beginnings and despite my childhood being very different from theirs, my family always reminds me to listen to and reach out to marginalized communities. For example, I have a strong affection for sharing my platform with non profit organizations. I make it a habit to emcee, interview and give back to these types of groups that uplift those in need.

Habit #3, SHARING MY PLATFORM: Each day while I’m scrolling through social media, I like to share news stories to my Instastories and Facebook page that I feel my followers might also find interesting. It’s another way I like to keep others informed as a news personality. This helps me also with engagement with viewers and listeners.

Habit #2, FINDING BALANCE: As much of a news nerd I can be with finding interest in several topics, I also have experienced burnout in the past– and have learned the hard way, I NEED to take my Me time. Morning outdoor walks with my dog or cooking with the music blasting, or a hot bath to just relax. Things like working out can be therapeutic. I literally schedule that time in so I can’t ignore it.

Habit #1, KEEPING MY FAITH: Above all else, I have faith everything will work itself out. I’m thankful that my parents instilled in me to stay faithful in God. I know when my intuition is speaking to me. Anxiety can rob you of peace. So I make it a habit to pray, listen to the word of God and write down what is keeping my mind from being at ease. The benefits transcend all aspects of my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For the past 15 years I have worked in broadcasting, spanning in television and radio news roles such as Anchor/ Reporter to even Weather Anchor and Emcee. I am most proud of the way that I have grown from working in a smaller South Texas town to coming back to work in what I consider to be my hometown, Dallas-Fort Worth. I still feel like I have so much more to achieve, however that is not to diminish my previous accomplishments. Honors I have received alongside my teammates such as earning national recognition for Best Newscast and Best Breaking News Coverage by the Edward R. Murrow Awards as well as similar recognition by the Texas Association of Broadcasters, are some of my proudest moments in my career thus far. Aside from awards, I am proud of the connection I have built with my listeners and previous tv viewers. That is something that is absolutely priceless. Earning their respect, love and support is truly humbling. I’m not perfect. I’ve definitely made mistakes on air, ha! But all of those moments, I’ve learned to take in stride. I know there is always room to learn, room for improvement and room to grow into new spaces. I have pushed myself to try different roles in the news industry and continue to push myself to new levels. I’ve learned you don’t have to be what others want you to be. If you stay true to yourself, your destiny will take through all sorts of adventures no-one on earth could have written for you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am literally the person that makes all the suggestions in the group chat and hope somenone else will execute the plans!! I literally have over 50 restaurants saved in my phone right now of places I want to try. So if a friend were to come visit from out of town, I’m definitely giving them a list and then letting them pick! Some of my favorite simple “good every time” places would have to include: Mike’s Chicken, Crickles and Co., Kitchen and Kocktails, and Dolly Lama. Grandscape is an area that has definitely blossomed. I would certainly bring someone visiting to go see that and of course the Star in Frisco. I also enjoy dong things outdoors, like taking my dog to Mutts in uptown, kayaking on White Rock Lake or even going for a walk on the Katy Trail. Renting a boat and taking it out on one of our area lakes and bringing a picnic would also be on my list of suggestions for a friend visiting from out of town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would be nothing without My Heavenly Father and my incredible parents and family that He’s blessed me with. I am also thankful to have such a loving group of friends that have been my day ones. My longtime boyfriend who’s also taught me so much. Truly, I am surrounded by people I genuinely admire each day.
