We had the good fortune of connecting with Lacey Boerm and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lacey, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started photographing weddings as a second shooter or just shadowing other photographers at only sixteen years old. At first I wasn’t sure I liked it, but after doing quite a few weddings in such a short span of time, I realized that weddings are my passion! I knew that this was the path I wanted to take, and I went all in. I realized that couples deserve to have beautiful photos of themselves and their loved ones on the most special day of their lives, and I knew I could do that for them. On my eighteenth birthday this year, I launched my first ever website, and booked my first wedding on my own only weeks later. Seeing their joy after delivering that gallery only fueled the fire in me to continue pushing on this path!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think I’m most excited about the fact that I’m in the position I am at only eighteen years old. That opens to the door to grow so much in my upcoming years, both in my business and as a person. The fact that I’m photographing weddings at eighteen years old is a pretty insane thing that isn’t seen very often, so it gives me a bit of a push to keep going and keep growing.
I was very blessed at how my career started. I’ve been taking photos for as long as I can remember. But in 2021 I second shot a wedding for the very first time for my now-very dear friend Megan Smart. That wedding sparked the realization in me that weddings and couples are what I want my niche to be! It was a very hard thing to do, like anything you do for the first time. But I like to challenge myself, so I kept going to more weddings and learned more knowledge that I thought was comprehensible!
I’ve learned that in order to grow, you really really really need to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. If you’re always comfortable, you’re not learning.
I want people to know that even though I am very young, my age does not define my skill or creativity. If anything, my age gives me a boost!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m based in Kerrville, Texas, which is a decent sized town, but nothing compared to San Antonio or Dallas. That doesn’t stop it from having some great places to go, though!
I’d say if my best friend was visiting for a few days, I would take them to Thai Ocha for lunch. From there, we’ll either go to PAX Coffee & Goods or Nobilitea to grab some drinks! I’m a huge coffee girl, so some sort of caffeinated drink is a must. Once we get our drinks, I’ll probably take them to some of my favorite thrift or antique shops! Being eighteen, you don’t have a lot of money, so buying things secondhand for a fraction of the price is almost always a must. The Sunrise Antique Mall, Goodwill, The Salvation Army, or the Hill Country Youth Ranch Thrift Shop are my go-to’s! Once we’ve done our shopping, I’d probably take them to Louise Hays Park, it’s right on the river! Both the park and the river dam are two of my favorite places for photo sessions! Finally, we’d probably go back to my house to hang out. I live on a ranch, so there’s always places to ride around on the Polaris or animals to go see.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my parents 100%. They have driven me to almost every single wedding I have ever photographed, and picked me up at very very late hours of the night only to drive us another hour back home. They’ve sacrificed an immense amount of time and energy for me because they know how important this is for me, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
Megan Smart, for taking that first chance on me and not giving up on me or doubting my skill because of my very young age.
My group of best friends for alway showing me nothing love, encouragement, and their honest thoughts about anything I show or ask them about (even if they know what they say might not be what I necessarily want to hear.)
And God, for showing and guiding me on my path in life and using my creative skill to serve others for good.
