We had the good fortune of connecting with Ozan Bilaloğlu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ozan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Similar to many comic artists, I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. During certain periods of my life, I had to take extended breaks from drawing due to significant life events that left me feeling quite unhappy and in a state of depression. It was during these times of forced hiatus that I came to realize that creating comic art was an integral part of my being. It became apparent that I had to keep drawing to preserve my existence, or else I would risk getting lost in the hustle and bustle of life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In the past, I initially aimed to become a writer. I studied philosophy to expand my knowledge and perspective. Honestly, I’m not even sure where my diploma is anymore. However, as time went on, I realized that writing alone couldn’t fully convey my thoughts and feelings. That’s when I thought about incorporating my passion for comics to complement my writing. But over time, my love for drawing surpassed my writing ambitions, and it became clear that being an artist was my true calling.

During this transition, I dabbled in creating small animations and illustrations. I discovered that comic art was better suited for telling longer, more meaningful stories. So, I shifted my focus to learning the art of comics, and I began to share my initial works. While I’m not exactly where I want to be yet, I’m steadily making progress. This journey has required me to give up many of life’s comforts – casual gatherings, beloved video games, stacks of books to read, and great movies and series. These sacrifices were necessary to reach this point. These days, I find a bit more comfort, but I understand the importance of maintaining a strong work ethic.

I have countless stories that will fill numerous comic books to share with the world. The projects I’m working on are quite demanding, but I’m confident they’ll be worth it. Comic art has truly become my most authentic way of self-expression.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve always been more of a nature and tranquility enthusiast. This was true in my early years as a child and during my youth. I can’t say I’m too picky or knowledgeable when it comes to food and drink. I don’t have many hobbies or strong interests to speak of. However, I can say that I have a preference for natural and simple foods. As long as I’m surrounded by the people I love, I don’t place too much importance on the location or setting. I might not be the life of the party, especially because I tend to favor historical places that many people might not find all that exciting.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I want to express my deep gratitude for the incredible support of my beloved wife. Unfortunately, the society I’m a part of doesn’t always give comic art the recognition it deserves. Consequently, the hours I’ve dedicated to comic art were sometimes seen as futile by many. However, my wife’s unwavering belief in my ability to find personal happiness through this pursuit exceeded even my own. She provided me with a nurturing workspace, a sanctuary of sorts. I also want to extend my appreciation to my brother, a fellow artist. He has consistently offered a helping hand, especially in technical aspects, and he has shown incredible patience in addressing my numerous inquiries.

Starting a new career from scratch, especially as I approached my forties, was undeniably a significant challenge. Nevertheless, as time passed, my work began to resonate with readers, and my connections with fellow artists grew. This journey introduced me to new friends who have been pivotal in providing steadfast support. They know who they are.
