We had the good fortune of connecting with Quyen Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Quyen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my journey in the beauty industry in 2009 by working for Snipz Salon as their front desk coordinator, in Mission Hills, sd, ca. it was 15 mins away from my home and situated in a neighborhood that I have been to, I wanted to expose myself to a different world to help me gain any knowledge and skills that my current circle of friends and family couldn’t provide.
The amazing owners of Snipz Salon had purchased a house and converted it to a salon, which taught me a thing or 2 about owning your passion and business.
I finished beauty school by the summer of 2011 and moved on to multiple different salons as I learned to manage my time, my attitude and focused on what I wanted to provide to my customers. I soon realized I enjoyed doing more than just hair styling and learned as many beauty services as I was able to, to help me stay busy.
I had my first born in 2012, when I went back to work, my days were much slower than I wanted and after 8 years of working for other shops, I realized I have much more to offer and no longer wanted to share my income with someone who had nothing to do with my growth.
I started to brainstorm on what I can do and own, with the income I had. It was definitely a struggle to get funding together as banks did not see my business income as profitable enough to give me a loan.
A positive mind and my work ethics helped me attract what I needed.
I am 2nd youngest out of 8, which taught me to budget in many ways. I spent 3 years at Mesa College, to study interior design before I left for beauty school in 2009, that time gave me the confidence to purchase and flip a 28 ft rv and convert this beast into my MQBILE STUDIQ SALQN today. The goal was to work from home, be with my kids when I’m not busy with clients, work on other artistic projects and most importantly owning my passion and business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Mobile Studio Salon is built out to either work from home or work wherever you are invited. I paid off my business within 2 years and I am ready to expand to whomever is ready to take on the challenges of this start up business, which will allow flexibility and growth based on the efforts that each individual puts in.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am still new to Dallas Texas but the places I’ve explored so far that I would take my people to is : cedar hill state park for a picnic by the lake or even camping! Texas live is a great big space for live music, which I would love to perform at some day, I also write poetry and am working recording a few more songs to complete My album. Bolder and chicken pickle is my family’s go to spot for adventure with friends. My family and I love finding new places to bike around, so far white rock is our favorite lake to enjoy the beauty and outdoor space that dallas has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thank you to My partner, 19 years and counting, has been very supportive of all of my ideas, he has helped me as much as he is capable of.
I must say thank you to the team of Snipz Salon who was there with me from 2009-2011, everyone there had a big roll on who I was becoming.
I have to say thank you to the salons that I worked for, that did not work out because it taught me to adjust my attitude accordingly.
I have to say thank you to my good friend Kim phuong Do and cousin Sam who believed in me, shared their blessings with me to help me get started.
My amazing friend Ivis was the one who helped me pick up my 28 ft rv, (never have I driven a vehicle this big) he has always been so encouraging.
Shout out to Kim Rubi and Becxart for helping me paint my story on the RV to share with my community.
I thank the family members who helped me watch my kids as I worked to build my clientele.
I thank all of my special friends who supported all the business aspects that I’ve ever encountered to help me boost my energy and love for growth in not just the beauty industry but as person, mother, friend, sister.
I mostly am greatful to God for giving me the strength to not give up on myself when life gets tough.
